Finally! Financial literacy will be taught in New Zealand schools for Years 1–10 from next year.

As someone born and raised in New Zealand, I went through the entire school system without ever learning about mortgages, interest rates, or even how to budget properly. I was lucky and blessed to have my family educate me on the basics of financial literacy—but it wasn’t until I started working in the mortgage industry that I truly understood how money, lending, and long-term financial planning really work.
Now, as a mortgage adviser, I see firsthand how a lack of financial education affects everyday Kiwis—from first-home buyers to those trying to manage debt or grow their property portfolios.

That’s why it’s so encouraging to see the Government take this step. Teaching kids about money early on will set them up for a lifetime of informed decision-making.
It’s great to see Hon Erica Stanford MP bring about this much-needed change—such a positive move for the future of young Kiwis!
