Philippa Farmer - Canopy Group

Philippa Farmer - Canopy Group I help my clients find home loan solutions that work for them and implement plans to protect the things that are important to them. To be made redundant.

Many of my clients first seek out my services at a very exciting time in their lives-the purchase of a family home. I have access to all the main banks as well as non-bank lenders, and can suggest options for my clients who do not fit standard lending criteria. Together, we find a home loan solution that works for their unique needs. I also help my clients implement a plan to ensure the things the

y care about are protected. No one sets out to have a serious accident. Or be diagnosed with a serious illness. But I can help build a safety net to protect the things that are most important to you should life knock you down. Your family. Your home. Your future. Who do I work for? I work for you.

It is with great sadness I announce the passing of one of Canopy Group’s founding directors, Adrienne Teape.

Anyone who dealt with Adrienne will recall her sharp wit and no-nonsense approach. She had a remarkable ability to cut straight to the heart of an issue, and she expected clarity, integrity, and competence from those around her.

Yet what truly set her apart was that behind the formidable intellect and forthright manner was a deeply caring person. She took an interest in people, not just outcomes and many years after her retirement it was this aspect that past clients remembered about her.

On a personal note, I owe Adrienne an enormous debt of gratitude. She gave me my first (proper) job, an opportunity that shaped my confidence and my career.
And like so many others, she helped me with the purchase of my first home -not just arranging the finance, but also by encouraging, coaching and quite literally holding my hand at auctions.
Later, she entrusted me with the responsibility of taking over her business — a profound vote of confidence that I have never taken lightly. To carry on her work is both an honour and a responsibility, and one I approach with deep respect for the standards, values, and integrity she set.

Her legacy lives on not only in the business she built, but in the people she mentored and the opportunities she created. I am forever grateful to have been one of them.

Rest well, Aunty Adrienne x

The accessibility of non-Pharmac funded cancer treatments is again in the news, but this article in particular stood out to me. It is the first time I recall any mention of private health insurance being a potential solution.

Obviously this is a conversation I have almost daily, but it has always bewildered me as to why it was rarely mentioned in the media.

Is it right that here in NZ we have to pay for lifesaving treatments that are funded in many overseas countries? Absolutely not. But while we wait for the government and Pharmac to play catch up, there is action you can take to ensure if you or your family member were diagnosed with a life threatening illness that you could access treatments to give them the best possible chance.

Interesting little update just as I was about to sign off for the weekend......one of the major banks has actually DECREASED their test rate! For those who are not familiar, test rates are the interest rates the banks use to assess mortgage applications -they are notably higher than the actual interest rates on offer to ensure if rates do rise, borrowers will still be able to afford their repayments.

The last time we saw test rates being decreased was pre-Covid! Who can even remember that!

Is this a sign of things to come? Too early to tell just yet - this bank was definitely at the higher end of the scale so maybe they are just adjusting back to remain more in line with their competitors. I'll definitely be watching closely though because even small changes can be the difference between an approval or a declined mortgage application.

We've known for a while that the average woman's Kiwisaver balance is well below the average mans. A new study (link below) has shown that in addition to the gender gap getting bigger, it is apparent in younger age groups -meaning it is not only impacting women at retirement, but also when it comes to purchasing a first home as they have lower balances to draw on.
I've challenged myself to talk to as many women as possible to help turn this around -if you know someone who would benefit from a chat with me, flick me a message. And, get in touch before the end of August to find out if you are eligible for our $50 referral campaign.

Celebrating my four year Loomiversary. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this home away from home- or office away from the office! It gives me a professional space to work from in Pukekohe when I’m not feeling the motorway commute to my main office in Mt Wellington. And great to be able to offer flexibility to my Franklin based clients too 🥰

Today is Philippa’s four year loomiversary, so a perfect fit for this meet-the-member Monday. So without further ado, meet Philippa Farmer - Canopy Group: understander of Kiwisaver, getter of mortgages, raiser of highland cows and gifter of houseplants!

What do you do?
As a financial adviser, I help people with three main goals – buying property, protecting their loved ones and planning for a comfortable retirement.
Why did you join Loom?
Two main reasons – to have access to a professional space to meet clients in Franklin (my home office isn’t really suitable and my main office is in Mt Wellington), and secondly as a backup for when I’ve had enough of dealing with my rural internet at home!
What is your favourite thing about Loom?
I love the physical space – it’s full of natural light, it’s clean and modern and feels homey but without all the distractions of a home office.
What is your favourite place in Franklin?
My favourite place is Karioitahi – it’s my go to when I need to clear my head.
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A marine biologist. I even got the degree!
What is a common misperception about your work or industry?
Kiwis are really cynical when it comes to personal insurance, they seem to think insurers are just there to scam you out of a dollar. Clients are often genuinely surprised at the care and support we are able to wrap around them at claim time, it's so much more than just getting a payout.
