What’s your credit score – and why does it matter when applying for a mortgage?
Your credit score gives you an indication of how your credit history may look to lenders. But did you know you don’t actually have just one score?
Different credit reference agencies hold information about your credit history and calculate scores in different ways. That’s why you might see different numbers depending on where you check.
You may recognise platforms such as:
🔵 Experian – uses Experian data
🟢 ClearScore – uses Equifax data
🟣 Credit Karma – uses TransUnion data
So, don’t panic if your scores don’t match!
When you apply for a mortgage, lenders will look at information within your credit report alongside other factors such as your income, outgoings, deposit and their own lending criteria.
Checking your credit reports before you start applying can be a really useful step. It gives you time to:
✔️ Check your personal details are correct
✔️ Spot any missed or late payments
✔️ Make sure you’re registered on the electoral roll
✔️ Identify anything you don’t recognise
✔️ Correct errors before submitting a mortgage application
Thinking about buying or remortgaging? Speaking to a mortgage adviser early can help you understand where you stand and what options may be available to you.
