Part 1: Isolation and the 1% Prognosis
In December 2020, at the height of pandemic hospital restrictions, I was placed into a 24-day
medically induced coma. I was completely alone; no family or visitors were allowed inside the hospital
walls. Based on clinical data, doctors gave me a literal 1% chance of survival. They stated that if I
lived, the severe trauma, oxygen deprivation, and chemical sedation meant I would 'not be all there'
cognitively. Believing recovery was mathematically impossible, they recommended turning off my life
support machines.
Part 2: Surviving the System
Against all human odds, I woke up. On that exact day, my husband retired on the spot to become my
full-time caregiver, a role he has beautifully filled ever since. However, my immediate survival was
met with new crises: my kidneys failed completely. After enduring two agonizing rounds of treatment,
the intense pain drove me to refuse any further dialysis. Doctors explicitly warned me that this choice
meant death. Yet, by the following week, my body defied expectations once more—my kidney
numbers naturally normalized to a healthy average for my age.
Because the pandemic had utterly overwhelmed the healthcare system, the four months I spent in the
hospital and the subsequent month in a retirement and physical therapy facility were defined by
profound neglect. I was completely unable to do anything for myself and was often left lying in my
own f***s for more than an hour because the staff was spread too thin. From December 2020 until
April 2021, I went without a single shower or having my hair washed, resulting in the loss of most of
my hair. It was a deeply terrible, isolating experience.
Part 3: The Slow Climb to Independence
I left the facilities with a diagnosis of Critical Illness Polyneuropathy (CIP). My peripheral motor nerves
were pronounced dead by medical diagnostic tests. I spent two full years entirely bound to a
wheelchair, followed by another year relying heavily on combinations of a walker and wheelchair.
Multiple doctors told me flatly that I would never walk again.
I refused to accept that verdict. Under the guidance of a doctor who believed in the brain's hidden
powers, I began practicing Graded Motor Imagery. Every single day, I intensely visualized moving my
paralyzed right hand and physically talked to it. Through pure neuroplasticity, my brain successfully
rebuilt its internal maps. Today, that hand functions beautifully unless I am very tired or upset. By last
year, I transitioned fully from the wheelchair to a walker and cane. Just last week, seeking to reclaim
my independence, I drove a car for 30 miles to work with my husband sitting proudly in the passenger

seat—successfully navigating the commute despite my persistent right foot drop.
Part 4: The Loan Officer Who Beat the Odds
Today, I am fully present, processing complex financial data every single day as a full-time mortgage
loan officer serving the Charleston and Summerville, South Carolina areas. While I continue to battle
the chaotic hot and cold nerve sensations in my limbs and a trembling left hand, I stand as living proof
of recovery. I am the 1% who proved that your body and mind can rewrite their own pathways, even
when the world tells you it is impossible.
