Thinking about adding someone to the team? Start with the role, then look at the business behind it.

What needs doing? Is the expected workload there? How does the commitment fit into your cash-flow plan? Bring those questions and your current numbers into the discussion before deciding.

The wage figure is one part of a wider business decision. What would you want to understand before taking that step? Send Jai a general question for a future Carmody Q&A.

Two businesses can have similar turnover and very different accounting workloads.

One may have current records and a single entity. Another may need catch-up work or have more transactions and several entities. Those details matter when discussing the support each business needs.

Before the conversation, note the state of your records, the workload involved and any complexity you want to explain. Carmody reviews those details before confirming the proposed scope and fee, so the discussion starts with the whole business.

The business you run today may look quite different from the one you started.

More people, extra entities or a heavier transaction workload can change the accounting support you need. The questions you want answered may have changed too.

Make a short list of what has grown and where your current arrangement needs a review. That is a useful starting point for agreeing the work that fits now. Book a free 15-minute call with Jai to explain what has changed in your business.

Before you agree to accounting support, ask what the agreement covers.

Which services are included? What sits outside the fee? How will you communicate? What happens if the work your business needs changes? These are practical questions, and it is reasonable to want clear answers before committing.

When discussing monthly support with Carmody, bring your priorities and any uncertainty about the work involved. Review the proposed services, limits, fee and terms so you understand the scope of the engagement.

Discuss your options: https://carmodyaccounting.com.au/book-a-free-consultation

You have the report. What do you need it to tell you?

Try starting with three questions: what changed, why did it change, and what needs attention? A movement in margin or cash is more useful to discuss when you know which part you want explained.

Write that question beside the report before your next conversation. Carmody can discuss accounting support with reporting and business reviews that fit your needs. Book a free 15-minute call with Jai to talk about where to start.

What would useful accounting support look like in your business?

You may want help keeping the essentials in order, clearer reporting, or time to talk through a decision. Start by explaining the work you need and the questions you keep coming back to.

Carmody is preparing monthly support options around different business needs. The conversation comes first: your records, your workload and the support you are looking for. Scope, fee and terms are discussed before you decide to engage.

What surprised you in the quarter’s numbers?

Perhaps sales were busy but cash felt tight. Perhaps a familiar cost started taking a bigger share. The useful next step is to name the change you want explained, rather than trying to solve the whole quarter at once.

What would you ask about sales, costs or cash? Send Jai a general business question through Ask Us. Your question can help shape a future practical Carmody Q&A for other business owners too.

Your bank balance is useful. It still leaves questions unanswered.

Bring five numbers into the same review: revenue, gross margin, net profit, cash and debtor days. Look at how they have changed and ask what sits behind the movement. Are sales stronger while payments are slower? Have costs changed the result?

Start with numbers you can understand and a question you want answered. If you would like to discuss where to begin, book a free 15-minute call with Jai.

Before you set the next goal, give the last quarter a proper look.

Which costs moved? Were customers taking longer to pay? Did stronger sales leave more cash in the business? Pick one change you want to understand, then look at the records behind it.

You do not have to tackle every question at once. A clear starting point makes the next conversation more useful. Carmody’s free Business Health Check can help you decide which area to review first.

Tax time doesn't have to be a scramble. The businesses that breeze through it have a few simple habits — regular bookkeeping, receipts saved as they go, and a quarterly check-in with their accountant.

Build the habits now and 30 June is just another day.
