**Flooding Recovery: What to Do After the Water Recedes**

With communities throughout Indiana experiencing flooding, many families and property owners may be navigating damage and beginning the recovery process.

Whether you have flood insurance or not, here are a few important steps to keep in mind:

📸 **Document the damage.** Once it is safe to enter the property, take clear photos and videos of affected areas and damaged belongings **before beginning cleanup or throwing items away**.

🛑 **Prevent further damage when possible.** Take reasonable steps to protect your property from additional damage, but always put your personal safety first.

🧾 **Keep your receipts.** Save receipts for cleanup supplies, temporary repairs, and other expenses related to protecting your property from further damage.

📞 **Contact your insurance professional.** Even if you're unsure whether your policy provides coverage for the damage, reach out to your insurance agent or carrier to discuss your policy and determine your next steps.

🌊 **If you have an NFIP flood insurance policy, report your claim promptly.** You can submit your First Notice of Loss through the NFIP Policyholder Portal or call **800-638-6620**. A claims adjuster will then be assigned to help guide you through the process.

**Important reminder:** Most standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover damage caused by flooding. Flood insurance is typically a separate policy.

Recovery can feel overwhelming, but documenting everything and knowing where to start can make the process a little easier.

Yesterday, the AMH Group / Insurance & Risk Management team had the opportunity to spend valuable time connecting with two of our trusted carrier partners. We met with Shawn McKnight, LUTCF, CSD, from Kansas City Life Insurance Company, gaining valuable insight into life solutions that help us better serve families and protect futures.
