Intelligent Investing will be the first to acknowledge that we cannot control markets or even how long you may live. However, we believe that by investing prudently through market cycles while managing risks, controlling our own emotions, while coaching you to control your emotions, we may provide a smoother path as we travel together on this journey called life.

We can help you remove the emotions out of investing, and help you maintain the course towards your financial goals.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern among a certain kind of client. Often — though not always — an engineer by training. Methodical. The kind of person who built a savings spreadsheet sometime in their thirties, updated it faithfully every year since, and can tell you their net worth to the dollar without opening the file.

That discipline is exactly why they’re sitting across from us with $1 million or more saved. It worked. In fact, it worked for twenty-five or thirty years.

The Spreadsheet That Never Sleeps Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern among a certain kind of client. Often — though not always — an engineer by training. Methodical. […]

Over the last decade or so, I’ve noticed a pattern in the questions I get from prospective clients. Someone will ask me about converting part of their traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. It’s a smart question. It’s often the right question.

But by the time I hear it, the person asking has usually already started Social Security. And once that happens, the window for doing much with Roth conversions is already closing, or closed.

Nobody told them the window existed in the first place. That’s not their fault. Nobody had a reason to.

A Question That Arrives Too Late Over the last decade or so, I’ve noticed a pattern in the questions I get from prospective clients. Someone will ask me about converting […]

No advisor can consistently deliver “outperformance.” The difference between Intelligent Investing and other advisory firms is that we will not lie about that fact.

However, we believe we offer more practical and reliable ways that hopefully will achieve superior long-term, real-life results.

If the Fed didn’t do anything, why did my portfolio move?

Here’s the simplest way I can put it: by the time the Fed announces a decision, markets have usually already priced in what they expect.

The move you see afterward is the gap between what was expected and what was actually said or signaled.

The Question I Keep Getting This Week “If the Fed didn’t do anything, why did my portfolio move?” I’ve had some version of this conversation more times than I […]
