Stephanie had a walk-in Thursday afternoon. Older gentleman from out past Iron Duff, pickup older than half our staff, just wanted someone to look at his policy without anyone trying to sell him something he didn't need. She sat with him for forty-five minutes. Coffee, paper printout, real conversation. Turns out his auto was still riding the pre-July 2025 minimums and didn't have UM/UIM the way NC now requires. Fixed it. He thanked her on the way out and asked if we sponsor the Bethel ballfield. We don't, but we're looking into it. That's what the Waynesville office actually looks like on a slow Thursday. Your wind deductible probably isn't a flat dollar amount.

Lots of WNC homeowners assume their hurricane or named-storm deductible is $1,000 or $2,500 like collision on a car. It usually isn't. It's a percentage of dwelling coverage. If your house is insured for $400,000 at a 2% wind deductible, you're paying the first $8,000 before the policy kicks in on a wind claim.

That matters when a June storm rolls over Maggie Valley and you've got shingles on the lawn. Pull your declarations page this weekend. Find the wind/named-storm line.

NC is not a no-fault state. If you're 1% at fault, you can be barred from collecting on the other driver's policy.

You're pulling out of Ingles on Russ Avenue. Another car runs the red and clips your front quarter panel. Police report shows their fault. Their carrier digs in and argues you crept past the white line by a foot before checking left. That 1% argument is legal in NC.

It's called pure contributory negligence. Four states still use it. NC is one. It's also why your own UM/UIM coverage carries more weight than most folks realize. It steps in when the at-fault carrier fights the split.
