“My doctor accepts Medicare, so I'm good.”

Maybe. But I need you to ask one more question. 👀

If you're considering a Medicare Advantage plan, knowing that your doctor “accepts Medicare” doesn't necessarily tell you whether they're in-network with the specific plan you're considering.

And THAT'S the question we actually need answered.

Because your doctor could see Medicare patients but not participate in every Medicare Advantage plan available in your area.

Why does that matter?

Depending on the type of plan, seeing an out-of-network doctor could mean paying more or not having coverage for that care at all, except in certain situations.

So if keeping your doctor is important to you, don't stop at:

“Do you accept Medicare?”

Ask:

“Are you in-network with this specific Medicare Advantage plan?”

Even better, let's verify it while we're reviewing your options.

Because finding a plan you like and THEN realizing your favorite doctor isn't in-network?

I'd rather skip that particular January surprise. 😂

Here's something you might not expect to hear from me during AEP:

I might tell you to keep the Medicare plan you already have. 🙌

Because the goal of an annual review isn't to find a reason to change your coverage.

It's to make sure the coverage you have still makes sense for you.

We'll look at what's changing for 2027.

We'll check your doctors and prescriptions.

We'll look at your costs and the benefits you actually use.

And we'll talk about whether anything in your life or healthcare needs has changed.

Then we compare.

Sometimes, we'll find another option that makes more sense.

And sometimes?

We'll look at everything and realize your current coverage is still doing exactly what you need it to do.

That's a successful review too.

You don't get bonus points for changing Medicare plans every year. 😂

You just want to know that you're making an informed decision instead of keeping something simply because you've always had it.

AEP is officially OPEN! 🎉

And before we spend the next several weeks talking about plans, prescriptions, doctors, benefits, and all the other Medicare things, here's what I want my clients to know first:

You don't have to figure this out by yourself.

You're going to see commercials.

You're going to get mail.

Your neighbor is probably going to tell you how much they LOVE their plan.

And someone on Facebook will inevitably announce that they've found the “best” Medicare plan. 😂

But none of those people know your doctors.

They don't know which prescriptions you take.

They don't know what you can comfortably afford if you need a lot of healthcare next year.

And they don't know which benefits actually matter to you.

That's why we're going to look at your situation before deciding whether anything needs to change for 2027.

Maybe we find an option that works better for you.

Maybe we look at everything and decide your current coverage still makes sense.

Either way, the goal isn't to change your plan just because it's AEP.

It's to make sure you understand what you have and feel good about your decision for next year.

So if Medicare starts feeling especially LOUD over the next few weeks, remember:

You don't have to sort through all of it alone.

AEP starts tomorrow.

And just in case you needed someone to say it:

You do NOT have to pick a Medicare plan tomorrow. 🙌

October 15 is the day Annual Enrollment Period opens, not the day you need to have everything figured out.

You have until December 7.

So if you're already feeling like you need to hurry up, compare everything, make a decision, and check Medicare off your list...

Please don't.

I'd much rather you take the time to look at your doctors, prescriptions, pharmacy, costs, and the benefits you actually use than rush into a decision because AEP officially started.

There IS a deadline.

But there's also time to ask questions, understand your options, and make a decision based on what actually works for you.

So tomorrow, we're not panicking. 😂

We're just getting started.

You may have seen this number floating around for 2027:

$41.33.

And if you thought, “Oh! So that's what my Medicare drug plan is going to cost next year?”

Not quite. 🙃

$41.33 is the 2027 Part D base beneficiary premium.

It's a number Medicare uses as part of the calculation behind Part D premiums, but it is NOT the price tag for every Medicare drug plan.

Your actual premium will depend on the specific plan you're enrolled in.

Which is why I don't want you making decisions based on one Medicare number you saw in a headline, a Facebook post, or somewhere else online.

What matters is what YOUR specific coverage will cost for 2027 and how that coverage works with the prescriptions you actually take.

So if you've seen $41.33 and were wondering what the heck it means for you, send me a message.

You found your medication on the drug list. 🙌

Now I want you to look for three more things:

Prior authorization.

The plan may require approval before it covers the medication.

Step therapy.

You may need to try a different medication first before the plan covers the one your doctor prescribed.

Quantity limits.

The plan may limit how much of the medication it covers within a certain period of time.

Why does any of this matter?

Because seeing your medication on the formulary doesn't necessarily mean you'll walk into the pharmacy in January and pick it up without any extra steps.

And THAT is something I'd much rather know before you choose your coverage than when you're standing at the pharmacy counter wondering why your prescription isn't ready. 😬

These are exactly the kinds of little details that are easy to miss when you're comparing plans, so I included them in my 2027 Medicare Plan Review Checklist.

Comment CHECKLIST and I'll send you a copy so you know what to look for when reviewing your prescriptions for next year.
