When your pipes freeze here are some great tips. My favorite is #3.

From personal experience, a pipe can bust under your house and you won't know it. Your water bill might slowly creep up if it's just a small drip or have a giant jump if it's a full burst pipe. Always insulate your outdoor faucets! But if your pipes do freeze, see below for some thawing tips:

When your pipes freeze be careful with thawing techniques.
Experience shows:
1) Open up the faucets. Even if no water comes out this will lessen the pressure when the water thaws.
2)Raise the room temperature near the faucet. The safest way is with an elevated space heater.
3)Pour a few tablespoons (more than this can damage your pipes) of salt down the drain. This works on roads and it will in pipes.
4)Know where your shut off valve is in case it bursts.
