UK inflation rises in first data reflecting Iran conflict

Markets predict interest rate hike to 4% by September

The prospect of interest rate rises to tackle the UK's latest wave of inflation has moved up a gear.

Financial market participants have now fully priced in a rate hike to 4% by September, London Stock Exchange Group data shows.

The betting is shifting in response to recent official data.

It has shown economic growth running at a better-than-expected pace and unemployment coming down.

Today's inflation figures, showing the main measure rising from 3% to 3.3% on the back of US-Iran war-linked oil price hikes, have focused attention firmly on the prospects for the pace of price growth ahead.

It is expected to tick up, so long as oil and gas supplies are disrupted in the Gulf.

The Bank of England will be worried that rising costs across the economy in the months ahead will become ingrained.

It can use interest rate hikes to choke off demand in the economy, but many economists still do not believe the Bank will have to raise rates at all, given that they remain restrictive at 3.75%.

Much will depend on whether the effect of rising prices curbs spending and hiring more widely, as recent forecasts have suggested.
