A PRECIOUS BABY 😭💛💜
Getting Athena socialised and settled before she becomes a big old lab retriever cross.

A new thing I have learnt - it can be scary for puppies to go for a wee / poo anywhere that’s not the garden. Athena has been coping others in the toilet department. I never thought I would cheer so much at a dog doing a 💩 but there you go 😅

A realistic representation of me and my working day.

There’s a LOT more that goes into dog walking than simply picking up a load of dogs and heading out for a stroll.

Every group walk is carefully planned, and there are so many factors I have to consider when deciding which dogs walk together.

Energy levels. High, medium or low

Size and physical ability

Temperament and compatibility

Training needs and how many dogs require long lines

Individual triggers and behavioural needs

Whether dogs are intact, neutered or spayed

Owners’ schedules and preferred walking times

Locations and suitable walking environments

Coat types – who can handle the mud and who can’t

And, of course, who’s most likely to find the nearest pile of fox poo to roll in!

And that’s before factoring in travel times, weather conditions, cancellations, last-minute changes and making sure every dog receives the attention and care they deserve.

Dog walking is NOT simply throwing a group of dogs together and hoping for the best.

It’s planning, organisation, behaviour management, risk assessment, decision-making and a huge amount of responsibility.

No two days are the same, and no two dogs are the same.

So, when someone suggests dog walking isn’t a proper job, I’d strongly disagree.

It’s not just walking dogs. It’s managing dogs, personalities, environments, schedules and safety.

And I absolutely love what I do.

Me 🤝 Nature

Dog walking has never just been about the dogs for me. It’s my little escape from reality, a chance to switch off from everything else and just feel like myself again.

Somewhere along the way this year, I lost a bit of my love for slowing down and appreciating nature. Life has been clouded by change and the process of finding myself again.

But slowly, I can feel myself coming back to the things that make my soul happy. The simple things that make life feel good again.

Animals, nature, friends, family, long walks and a LOT of red w**e. 🍷🤎

A reminder to do something that makes you feel yourself again. You only get one shot at this! Make it count 🥾

Friendships, muddy paws, and a whole lot of love. I am blessed 🤎

Enclosed fields and why I love them! 🐾

I only use enclosed fields on Fridays, as this is the day I have dogs that might need a little more assistance with socialising in a safe, enclosed space.

Enclosed fields have helped me socialise dogs that wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to do so out in public.

I also wanted to shed a little light on the seriousness of having dogs that can be a little crazy when they’re out and about!

If a dog were to trip someone over and cause them to break their leg, or run into someone and cause them to break a finger, there could be serious consequences. Depending on the circumstances, the dog could be considered dangerously out of control, potentially resulting in restrictions on being off lead in public.

Part of being a responsible dog walker is knowing when to make that decision. Whether that’s recognising that a dog needs a safe, enclosed environment to socialise, or that they aren’t quite ready to socialise with other dogs without the help of a dog trainer.

Enclosed fields have also helped me develop my understanding of dogs’ body language and recognise when play is healthy, even when it might look a little rough! It’s given me the confidence to know when to intervene and when to let dogs enjoy themselves.

And the dogs absolutely love it! Having the freedom to roam, sniff, wee, chase, play and do whatever their hearts desire for the 50–55 minutes we have the field to ourselves.

The two fields I mainly choose to visit are:

🐾 Windhover Walkies

🐾 Bill’s Place at Ashingdon Heights Kennels

Both give the dogs the opportunity to enjoy themselves in a safe environment, which is exactly why I love using them!

Muzzle awareness

I wanted to shine a little light on muzzles and why they’re used.

Since Winston has started wearing one, I’ve been quite saddened by the amount of people who automatically assume he’s unfriendly, when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Muzzles have such a horrible stigma around them, when actually they’re simply a safety tool. I’ve met so many dogs who wear them because they pick up and swallow dangerous things or eat food that could make them seriously unwell, rather than because they bite.

Of course it’s always good to be cautious around any dog you don’t know, but not just because they’re wearing a muzzle.

Winston is one of the sweetest, friendliest dogs you’ll ever meet. He just LOVES eating things he shouldn’t

His muzzle isn’t there because he’s dangerous, it’s there to keep him safe 🤎

And if you’re ever worried about putting a muzzle on your dog because of how other people might view them, please don’t let that stop you. Your dog’s safety is far more important than somebody else’s opinion. We’ve been taught for years to associate muzzles with aggressive dogs, and that stigma is simply outdated.

A muzzle doesn’t tell you what kind of dog is underneath it.

I posted this picture a year after starting my own business to show how proud I was of myself… and somehow it’s now been 4 years… I don’t know where that time has gone. This is officially the longest I have stuck at any ‘job’ 🩷

Running your own business is truly humbling in ways you just never imagine. The amount of help I’ve had from friends, family and people close to me over the years has been immense. And whilst I absolutely hate relying on people, it really does show you who would genuinely do anything to help you. People and clients that have come and gone, I’ll be grateful for every single one

I’m so grateful for my little business. The dog walking world has definitely changes in the last 4 years meaning I’ve had to tweak things along the way and running a business definitely isn’t always easy, but I’m still here, plodding along step by step, walk by walk 🚶‍♀️ and I’m so proud of myself for sticking with something I’ve always loved.

For so many years I told myself I wanted to work with animals. I just never really knew what that looked like or what I actually wanted to do. Then this door opened up and just became my entire life. Since losing my best friend, this business has meant more to me than anything. Buddy was my purpose. He came into my life to show me what my future was. He was and always will be the reason

I genuinely never thought I’d be living my absolute dream.

Every year I think about what else I could do with my business or where I could take it next, and nothing has ever really quite stuck. But this year feels a little different. Slowly but surely I feel like I’m starting my next adventure, and who knows, by the end of this year there might be another little door opening for some new opportunities…

4 years later and I’m just so proud of myself.

I dreamt it and I made it happen. ❤️

Happy 4 years Buddy’s Paws on Tour 🐾
