Mine was a Vauxhall Corsa that overheated every time it saw a hill and had a stereo that only worked if you slapped the dashboard. Wouldn't trade the memories for anything though.

Been self-employed for a while and worried it makes car finance a nightmare? 👀

Fair concern — but not always true.

Yes, the process might involve a bit more paperwork than someone on a PAYE salary — usually SA302s, tax returns, or recent bank statements. Lenders want to see that your income is consistent, not necessarily that it comes from an employer.

Freelancers, contractors, sole traders, limited company directors — there are lenders who work with all of these regularly.

If you've been putting off looking because you assumed the answer would be no, might be worth actually checking. You might be surprised.

What actually affects your finance eligibility?

Wondering what actually goes into a car finance decision? 🤔

There's a bit of mystery around it, so here's what lenders are really looking at:

• Your credit history — but it's not the only thing
• Your income and how stable it is
• Your existing outgoings (rent, other loans, etc.)
• How much you want to borrow vs. what you could comfortably afford
• Your address history — 3 years of UK address is standard

None of these are pass/fail on their own. Lenders look at the whole picture, which is why two people with similar credit scores can get different answers.

And the bit most people find surprising: you can check where you stand without any of it affecting anything.

The good bits:
• Cheaper to run per mile — sometimes a lot cheaper
• Fewer moving parts, so less to go wrong long-term
• Home charging overnight is a game-changer if you have a driveway

The trickier bits:
• Higher upfront cost
• Public charging is still a mixed bag depending where you live
• Second-hand EV values are all over the place right now
