The Bank of Canada kept its policy rate unchanged for a seventh straight meeting as tensions in the U.S.–Canada trade dispute threaten growth and raise the possibility of renewed inflation pressure.

Governor Tiff Macklem and his colleagues held the overnight rate at 2.25%, aligning with economists’ expectations in a Bloomberg survey and with traders in swap markets.

Officials are keeping short-term borrowing costs steady while assessing the uncertainty from the tariff escalation between Canada and the USA, that have been disputing trade since President Donald Trump took office again last year.

Although the economy and inflation are largely following the central bank’s July outlook, the bank noted that inflation risks have risen while tariffs add more uncertainty to growth prospects.
