📰 FROM THE ARCHIVES | 1998

As we continue celebrating 40 years of Finance Brokers of Tasmania, we've been digging through the archives… and this one was too good not to share.

Back in 1998, The Examiner featured Lance and Finance Brokers of Tasmania after the business reached a pretty exciting milestone:

$20 million in new business over two years.

At the time, the business had grown from the one-man operation Lance started in Launceston in 1986 to a team of six across Launceston and Hobart.

And finance looked very different.

No smartphones.
No online applications.
No electronic signatures.
No uploading bank statements from your phone.
And certainly no loan application being zipped across the internet in seconds. 📠

Even the size of the loans has changed enormously.

In 1998, $20 million of lending across two years was significant enough to earn Lance a commemorative plaque and a newspaper story.

Today, the numbers involved in property and finance would have been difficult to imagine back then.

But our favourite part of this old article isn't the $20 million.

It's something Lance said about why clients were choosing finance brokers:

“Banks can only offer one product, their own, whereas we can shop around for a client and get them the best deal.” Sound familiar? 😉

Technology has changed.
Property prices have changed.
Loan sizes have certainly changed.

But 28 years later, the reason people choose a broker hasn't changed all that much.

🎂 TODAY WE TURN 40! 🎂

On this day in 1986, Lance Cure started Finance Brokers of Tasmania.

There was just one small complication…

Finance broking didn't really exist in Tasmania yet. 😳

Lance became Tasmania's first finance broker, starting a business that looked very different from the one we know today.

There were no online applications. No electronic signatures. No emails flying backwards and forwards. And definitely no Zoom meetings.

Instead, Lance got in the car.

Some of his earliest clients were truck drivers and people working in Tasmania's logging industry, and he'd travel to country pubs to meet them, often sitting down over a meal to talk about finance for their next truck or piece of equipment.

Fast-forward 40 years and an extraordinary amount has changed.

Finance broking has become an established industry. Technology has transformed the way we work. Our team has grown. We've expanded across Tasmania. And this year, another chapter began as Finance Brokers Tasmania and Dynamic Brokers came together to become Dynamic Finance Brokers Tasmania.

But one thing hasn't changed.

It's still about people. 💙💚

For four decades, Tasmanians have trusted us with some of the biggest decisions and moments in their lives: buying their first home, growing a business, purchasing equipment, investing for the future and sometimes simply figuring out what comes next.

We've seen clients come back again and again. We've helped their children. We've watched businesses grow. And we've been incredibly lucky to be part of thousands of stories along the way.

So today we're raising a glass (and probably eating some cake 🎂) to 40 years of Finance Brokers of Tasmania.

To Lance, who started it all.

To every staff member who has been part of the journey.

To our lenders and business partners.

And most importantly, to every client who has trusted us over the past four decades.

Thank you. We wouldn't be celebrating this birthday without you.

🏠 Good News for Tassie First Home Buyers! 🎉

Thinking about building your first home?

The Tasmanian Government has announced that the First Home Owner Grant will continue beyond 30 June 2026.

✅ The grant will remain available after 30 June 2026
✅ However, it will reduce from $30,000 to $20,000

That means eligible first home buyers who build or purchase a new home could still receive valuable support towards getting into the property market.

While a $20,000 grant is still a fantastic helping hand, those who are in a position to move sooner may be able to take advantage of the higher $30,000 grant before 30 June 2026.
