- IIABCal members are involved for many reasons, so we asked some of them to share their "Why". Here are the thoughts of Colleen Lazinich, CIC, CRM - CEO of CalNonprofits Insurance Services in Capitola, on the benefits of IIABCal’s broad range of resources.

❔ What got you involved in IIABCal?
"My insurance career spans nearly 40 years in a variety of industry roles. 10 years ago when I accepted the CEO role at this independent agency/brokerage, I knew it was important to be involved in the advocacy, networking, and education opportunities that IIABCal provided to independent agents.

In the role I am in now, having access to IIABA, Diversity Council, legal/operational questions, programs like AgencyFocus & Catalyit, and having a voice in the legislative issues facing the insurance industry are all important reasons to be involved."

❔ How has utilizing the business products and resources offered by IIABCal impacted your agency?
"We have found several ways to partner and participate with IIABCal. The legislative updates are extremely helpful and we have even found ways to inform our board and parent nonprofit organization about wider industry issues. The Women’s Summit and educational webinars are very valuable to our teams. We also learned about Carey Wallace and AgencyFocus's services through IIABCal and have discounted access to the Catalyit offerings and tech resources."

During our recent Advocacy to oppose the Governor's proposed "Utility Bailout", IIABCal President Brandon Okita authored this Op-Ed, which was published by The Orange County Register.

While a last-minute bill to preserve insurance companies’ right of subrogation passed the Senate, it stalled in the Assembly and is considered dead. Thus, existing CA subrogation law remains unchanged. The Governor may call a special session to address this and other wildfire liability issues, so watch for future alerts.

Our 2026 Annual Membership Meeting will take place virtually on Wednesday, September 9, from 10 am-11 am. Join us for an important Q3 Legislative Update update, the state of the association report, and the results of the 2027 Board of Directors election.

Our annual board elections are conducted electronically prior to the meeting, with each agency’s designated voting representative receiving a ballot, and results will be shared during the meeting.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to pressure the Legislature into passing a last-minute bailout of utilities by restricting the utility shareholder liability for wildfires caused by their equipment. If successful, this would be catastrophic for homeowners and businesses—and imperil efforts to restore the property insurance marketplace to competitive health.

These actions could result in a major setback for the Insurance Commissioners Sustainable Insurance Solution, threaten to blow up applications to the FAIR Plan, and reverse incentives for property insurers to return to California.

Please urge your elected representatives in the Legislature to reject any proposals to eliminate subrogation.

In Memoriam.

IIABCal is sorry to hear of the passing of Mercury Insurance founder and Chairman, Mr. George Joseph, at the age of 104.

Mr. Joseph’s vision, courage, and care shaped Mercury. He believed insurance could be fairer and more accessible when guided by mathematics, actuarial discipline, data, and a genuine understanding of people’s needs.

We appreciate the support that Mr. Joseph gave - and Mercury continues to give - our members and industry.
