We've spent the past few weeks talking about IUL — Indexed Universal Life insurance. Here's the short version of everything we covered.

IUL is a permanent life insurance policy that builds cash value linked to a market index, with a floor to protect against losses.

When it might make sense for you:

✔ You want life insurance that also grows over time
✔ You've maxed out your 401(k) and IRA and want another tax-advantaged account
✔ You want retirement income that isn't subject to ordinary income tax
✔ You want protection from market downturns without sitting on the sidelines

When it probably isn't the right tool:

✔ You haven't captured your employer 401(k) match yet
✔ Your primary need is straightforward, affordable term coverage
✔ You're looking for uncapped market returns

IUL isn't a magic bullet — but for the right person, it can be a meaningful piece of a complete retirement plan.

If you've been curious about how it might work in your specific situation, that's worth a conversation. There's no cost and no pressure — just information.

Send us a message or give us a call. 🦆

Thinking about collecting Social Security while still working? There are a few things you'll want to know first.

If you claim BEFORE your Full Retirement Age and keep working:

⚠️ For every $2 you earn above the annual limit, $1 is withheld from your SS benefit
⚠️ The year you reach FRA, the limit increases significantly and the rules change
✅ The withheld benefits are NOT lost — they're added back to your monthly check once you reach FRA

After Full Retirement Age: You can earn as much as you want with NO reduction in benefits. None.

The lesson: timing your claim around your work schedule matters. Claiming too early while still earning can cost you real money.

Want to talk through your situation? I work with a lot of folks navigating this exact transition. 🦆

Medicare doesn't take the summer off — and neither do we.

A lot of people think Medicare only matters in October and November during Open Enrollment. But the truth is, questions and coverage issues come up year-round.

Maybe your doctor stopped accepting your plan. Maybe your prescription was dropped from the formulary. Maybe you're moving to a different county. Maybe you just got a notice in the mail that you don't understand.

Whatever it is — you don't have to figure it out alone.

Lucky Duck Retirement is a local, independent agency. That means when you call us, you reach a real person who knows your situation. Not a call center. Not a 1-800 number that puts you on hold for an hour.

✔ Coverage questions answered at no cost
✔ Plan comparisons any time of year
✔ Help understanding letters and notices
✔ Coordination when life changes affect your coverage

If you're a current Medicare beneficiary and something doesn't feel right about your coverage, reach out. That's exactly what we're here for. 🦆

One of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of Social Security planning: survivor benefits.

If you're married, the decisions you make NOW about when to claim can have a major impact on your surviving spouse later.

Here's what matters:

✅ A surviving spouse can receive up to 100% of their deceased spouse's benefit
✅ The higher earner's benefit becomes the survivor benefit
✅ This is why delaying the higher earner's SS to 70 is often recommended — it maximizes the lifelong income your spouse will receive
✅ Survivor benefits can begin as early as age 60

This is a conversation that feels uncomfortable to have, but the families who plan for it are so much better protected.

If you'd like to make sure your plan accounts for this, I'm here to help. No cost, no pressure. 📞 540.481.0664

Why does having a local agent matter when you're enrolling in Medicare?

You can sign up for Medicare at Medicare.gov. That part is free and available to anyone.

But navigating it alone is where things get complicated.

There are dozens of Medicare Advantage and Part D plans available in WV, VA, MD, and PA. Each one has different premiums, copays, drug formularies, and networks. Choosing the wrong one can cost you thousands in out-of-pocket expenses — and in some cases, you're locked in for a full year.

Here's what a local agent does differently:

✔ We know which plans are actually available in your zip code
✔ We check that your specific doctors and prescriptions are covered
✔ We compare total costs — not just monthly premiums
✔ We explain your options without pressure or sales tactics
✔ And we're here after enrollment when questions come up

We live in the same community you do. That matters.

If you're turning 65 in the next year, let's talk before the window opens. Complimentary. No obligation. 🦆

Quick question: Do you know YOUR Full Retirement Age for Social Security?

A lot of people assume it's 65. It's not.

Here's the breakdown:
📌 Born 1943–1954: FRA is 66
📌 Born 1955: FRA is 66 and 2 months
📌 Born 1956: FRA is 66 and 4 months
📌 Born 1957: FRA is 66 and 6 months
📌 Born 1958: FRA is 66 and 8 months
📌 Born 1959: FRA is 66 and 10 months
📌 Born 1960 or later: FRA is 67

Why does this matter? Claiming BEFORE your FRA permanently reduces your monthly benefit. Claiming AFTER it increases your benefit — up to age 70.

Knowing your FRA is the starting point for any smart Social Security strategy.
