Last week, the CPI saw a 0.1% decline from the previous month, bringing the 12-month rate to 3%βthe lowest in over three years! This may lead to lower interest rates later this year.
π¦πHighlights:
Core CPI: Up just 0.1% monthly, 3.3% annuallyβthe smallest annual increase since April 2021.
Gasoline prices: Down 3.8%, offsetting increases in food and shelter prices.
Shelter inflation: Dropped to a 5.2% annual rate, still above pre-pandemic levels but a significant decrease from early 2023.
Economists are optimistic that the Federal Reserve might announce a rate cut in their September meeting, viewing the higher CPI numbers in early 2024 as just a "bump in the road."
