Mississippi parents, you have less than 30 days to prepare for one of the biggest changes in Mississippi juvenile law in years. Starting July 1, Senate Bill 2710 takes effect and it is not a slap on the wrist. If your child is accused of committing or attempting to commit a violent crime while in possession of a firearm, they are no longer going through youth court. They are being prosecuted in adult circuit court, standing before a judge the same way any adult criminal defendant would. The penalties are harsher, the record follows them longer, and the consequences can derail everything — college, careers, relationships — for the rest of their life. This is not a maybe. This is the law.

The new law also goes after stolen fi****ms in a way Mississippi has never done before. If anyone sells, delivers, or transfers a stolen gun that later gets used in a violent crime, they are looking at 10 to 40 years in prison depending on the circumstances. That means if you knew that gun was stolen and it changed hands through you, you share in the consequences of whatever it was used for. On top of that, the law creates a brand new felony offense for anyone who willfully fires a weapon into a crowd of two or more people. It does not matter if nobody gets hurt. You could still face 5 to 15 years behind bars and fines of up to $10,000. Mississippi is sending a message and it is loud and clear.

At Mike Morrison Bail Bonding, we are in the middle of these situations every single day and we know exactly what a moment of bad judgment costs a family. Law enforcement officials across Mississippi are urging parents to have serious conversations with their children right now, before July 1 arrives. DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle put it plainly — a teenager who picks up a gun and makes the wrong choice may now face adult consequences that follow them for the rest of their life. Do not wait. Sit down with your children today. Talk to them about accountability, about fi****ms, and about what is at stake. And if the worst happens and your family needs help navigating the system, Mike Morrison Bail Bonding is here. Call us 601-582-5001. . . ゚
