New home? New baby? New job? Life changed? Your insurance may need a review too.

Changes to your income, employment, health, smoking status, or visa status may affect your insurance needs. It may be a good time to check whether your current cover still suits your needs, priorities, and budget.

Huwag hintayin na kailanganin mo ang insurance bago mo alamin kung suitable pa rin ang current cover mo.

Any recommendations will depend on your individual circumstances. Please seek personalised financial advice before changing or cancelling any existing policy.

As we're now halfway through 2026, I've found myself reflecting on a moment from last year that continues to shape how I approach my work.

I was honoured to receive the 2024 mySolutions Adviser of the Year Award.

After the presentation, someone came up to me and asked,

"So... what's your annual written business?"

I smiled and replied,

"Honestly, I don't really keep track. I just make sure I pay my tax obligations." πŸ˜„

That answer surprised a few people.

The truth is, I've never seen financial advice as a competition.

When your focus becomes production numbers or sales targets, there's a risk of losing sight of the person sitting in front of you. I've always believed that every recommendation should start and end with one question:

"What's in the client's best interest?"

Sometimes that means recommending more cover. Sometimes it means recommending less. And sometimes it means recommending no change at all.

Coming from a nursing background, I've seen how unpredictable life can be. That's why I take the time to understand each client's circumstances and, where needed, work with insurers to achieve the best underwriting terms possible, especially for those with more complex medical histories.

Looking back, I don't see this award as recognition for outperforming others. I see it as a reminder that if you consistently put people first, act with integrity, and genuinely care about the families you serve, recognition may follow but it should never be the reason you do the work.

As we head into the second half of the year, my commitment remains unchanged: to continue providing honest, client-first advice and to help more Kiwi families make informed decisions about protecting what matters most.

To every client who has trusted me with your insurance and KiwiSaver advice, thank you. Your trust is a privilege, and it's something I never take for granted.

A Lesson From This Week.

I recently came across another situation that reminded me why it is so important to ask questions before agreeing to any insurance changes. Long time clients of mine were approved for a mortgage and were encouraged to update their insurance as part of the process. Trusting the advice, they agreed. When we later compared their old and new policies, we found they had been moved to a different insurer and some valuable benefits were no longer included. Changing insurers is not always the wrong decision. In many cases, it is the right one. But you should always understand what is changing, what benefits you are keeping, what benefits you may be giving up, and why the recommendation is right for you.

On the other hand, I also have a client who is currently buying their first home, and their mortgage broker referred them back to me to review their existing insurance before any changes were considered. I really respect that approach because everyone stays within their area of expertise and the client comes first. Whether the advice comes from a friend, a family member, or another professional, always ask for a comparison before replacing an existing policy. A good adviser will be happy to explain the differences so you can make an informed decision.
