The agreement business partners always mean to sort out later.

Most business partnerships never get around to answering one question: what happens if one owner dies or becomes seriously unwell.

Without an agreement in place, and funding to back it, the remaining owners can end up in business with a grieving family instead of a partner. Or scrambling to buy out a share they haven't budgeted for. The family, meanwhile, is often left holding a stake in a business they have no way to run and no easy way to sell.

A buy/sell agreement settles it in advance. Who buys, at what value, and where the money comes from when it's needed.

It's one of those conversations that's far easier to have on an ordinary week than in the middle of a crisis.

A perfect credit record overseas doesn't come with you.

New Zealand lenders can't see it, and most don't ask for it. As far as an NZ bank is concerned, a new arrival has no file at all, which sounds worse than it is. It isn't treated as a black mark. It's treated as a blank one.

What actually gets assessed is what happens from here. How accounts are run once you're in the country. Whether income is stable and shows a track record over several months. Whether existing credit facilities, used or not, are sitting against you in the numbers a lender runs.

None of it is complicated, but a lot of it is easier to get right before you apply than to fix once you're mid-application.

Belonging Matters.

Mental Health Awareness Week starts today and runs until 18 October. This year's theme is Belonging Matters.

The idea behind it is simple. Feeling connected to the people around you is one of the strongest protective factors there is for mental wellbeing, and it rarely takes much. A conversation with a neighbour. Checking in on someone who has gone quiet. Making a bit of room for the person who's new.

On the Hibiscus Coast that's usually easier than most places, and still easy to let slip.

Spring is now storm season too.

The old assumption was that severe weather in New Zealand belonged to winter. Recent tracking from one of the country's largest insurers found the opposite: most storms in the past year hit during spring and summer, not the colder months, and storms are arriving far more often than they used to.

None of that changes what Fire and General cover is for. It just means the timing people have in their heads for reviewing it is probably out of date.

The usual gaps show up here. A newer roof or a renovated kitchen that hasn't been reflected in the sums insured. Contents that have quietly grown in value since the policy was last touched. A boat, a trailer, anything that needs its own line.

A quick check now costs nothing and takes less time than dealing with a gap after the fact.
