Self-employed? Your income isn't the problem. The paperwork is.

Self-employed and applying for a home loan? The rules aren't different — but the paperwork is.

Banks assess self-employed income differently to a salary. And the details shape what a lender thinks you can afford, and it's often less than what your business actually earns.

This is where the right structure before you apply matters more than the application itself.

If you're self-employed and thinking about buying, the best time to have that conversation is before you're ready to apply — not after a decline.

Your income is the engine behind everything else.

Think about what your household runs on. The mortgage, the groceries, the power bill, the kids' activities — almost all of it traces back to one thing: your ability to earn.

Disability cover exists for the moment that ability stops. If a serious illness or injury keeps you from working, it provides financial support so the engine keeps running while you focus on recovery.

It's one of the most overlooked covers in New Zealand, partly because no one likes to picture needing it. But for most working people, their income is the single biggest asset they'll ever have. It's worth protecting like one.

Worth a conversation if you've never reviewed it.

Did you know we do home loans now too?

Plenty of people know DormFIN for insurance. Fewer know that the same team can now help with home loans and business finance.

So if you're weighing up a first home, thinking about refixing your mortgage, or looking at finance to grow a business — that's now part of what we do, alongside the insurance side you might already know us for.

No starting over with someone new. Just one team that already knows your situation, able to help with more of it.

The deposit isn't the only number that matters.

Most first home buyers in New Zealand have heard they need a 20% deposit. For a lot of situations that's true — but it's far from the whole story.

There are low-deposit options. There's the First Home Loan. There's your KiwiSaver. And there's the gap between a pre-approval and an actual approval, which trips up more buyers than almost anything else we see.
Riaan Wilson, our mortgage adviser, has written up what the bank doesn't always explain — with the current NZ rules laid out plainly.

Every daffodil is someone's story.

Today is Daffodil Day.

Across the country, the Cancer Society's volunteers are out with their bright yellow flowers — and behind every one is real support for New Zealanders facing cancer. Transport to treatment, a place to stay, someone to talk to, and research working toward a future free from cancer.

One in three New Zealanders will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Most of us know someone. Today is a chance to give, to wear a daffodil, or simply to think of those going through it.

Could you still afford life if you couldn’t work?

Imagine waking up one day and suddenly not being able to work. Your income covers everything—rent, groceries, bills, and your family’s needs.
But what if an illness or injury took that away?
Many people assume ACC will cover them, but ACC only applies to accidents—not illnesses like cancer, stroke, or degenerative diseases.
Without an income, how long could you manage?

Disability insurance bridges the gap, providing a lump sum so you can continue to pay your bills and support your family, even if you can’t work. Because while recovery takes time, your expenses won’t wait.

Bills don’t stop, but your income might—unless you have a plan. Let’s secure your financial future today.

Growth and survival need different kinds of funding.

When a business needs money, the first question isn't 'how much' — it's 'what for.'

Covering a quiet month, bridging a gap between invoices, or smoothing out cash flow is one kind of need. Funding an expansion, new equipment, or a bigger premises is another. They call for different structures, and matching the wrong one to the job can cost a business more than the funding itself.

We work across lenders to help New Zealand business owners find finance that fits the actual purpose — not just the first option on the table.

Secure Your Adventure: Life Insurance for the Great Outdoors.

Life insurance for the way you actually live.

Camping at Piha. Tramping in Fiordland. Weekends that start before sunrise. If that's your family, your cover should account for it.

Life insurance isn't only about worst-case thinking. It's about making sure the people who depend on you aren't left sorting out a mortgage on their own.

Our team on the Hibiscus Coast looks at what you actually do, what you owe, and who relies on you — then works out what level of cover makes sense.

No pressure, no jargon. Just a clear picture of where you stand.

Send us a message if you'd like to talk it through.

Your business. Your terms.

Running a business often means navigating decisions around funding — whether that's for growth, equipment, cash flow, or a change in direction.

DormFIN's business finance service helps connect business owners with lending options structured around how their business actually operates, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you're exploring funding options for your business, it's worth having a conversation early — before you need the answer urgently.

Ever wondered what makes working with an adviser different from going straight to a provider? At DormFIN, our role is part adviser, part advocate — and it's all about what's right for you.

We take the time to understand what matters to you, then put together options that fit your life — not a generic checklist. We compare what's available, explain things in plain language, and stay with you through every step, from setup through to claims or settlement.

Whether it's life cover for your family, a mortgage that actually fits your budget, or business protection that lets you focus on running things — that's what we're here for.

And in most cases, you don't pay us directly — providers do. So you get expert guidance without the extra cost.
