Your relationship with money didn’t develop in isolation.

The way we save, spend, invest, avoid debt—or even avoid talking about money—is often shaped by our families, communities, culture and the society around us.

Financial literacy isn’t only about learning numbers. It’s also about recognising the beliefs we inherited, questioning the ones that no longer serve us, and choosing healthier money habits for ourselves.

What is one belief about money that you learned growing up?

Imagine reaching the World Cup final and saying:“Let’s just see how it goes. We haven’t really made a plan.” 😂Sounds rid...

Imagine reaching the World Cup final and saying:

“Let’s just see how it goes. We haven’t really made a plan.” 😂

Sounds ridiculous, right?

Yet that’s sometimes exactly how we approach our finances.

We find the dream house before checking our borrowing position.

We think about insurance only after life gives us a scare.

And our KiwiSaver? Sometimes it has been sitting in the same fund for years, quietly hoping someone remembers it exists. 😅

Right now, Spain and Argentina are playing for the biggest prize in football, and I can guarantee one thing:

Neither team arrived at the final by accident.

There was a strategy.
There was preparation.
There was a team.

Your financial future deserves the same attention.

At Advisenow, we help people navigate mortgages, insurance and KiwiSaver with a clear game plan built around where they are today and where they want to go.

So here’s the question:

If your finances were playing in a World Cup final today, are you prepared for the full 90 minutes… or are you hoping for a lucky penalty? 😄⚽️

Whatever happens on the pitch today, one thing remains true:

The right strategy and the right team can change the game. 🏆

Insurance is more than a financial product. It is a vital part of protecting your wealth, income, and future. In this article, you'll learn why insurance should be a core component of your financial strategy, the key types of cover every New Zealander should understand, how your insurance needs change throughout different life stages and employment situations, the common mistakes that leave families financially exposed, and why regular reviews with a trusted adviser are essential to keeping your protection aligned with your goals.

A practical guide to protecting income, assets, and lifestyle for professionals, migrants, and self-employed New Zealanders. Introduction: Why Risk Protection Matters More Than Ever in 2026 Most people think of wealth in terms of what they build (property, savings, KiwiSaver, and investments).

24/06/2026

Most people insure their house, their car, and even their phone.

But what about the one thing that pays for all of it… your income?

If an illness or injury stopped you from working tomorrow, how long could you maintain your lifestyle without a paycheck?

Income Protection isn’t just another insurance policy. It’s a financial safety net that helps protect your greatest asset: your ability to earn.

If you’d like to find out whether Income Protection is right for you, send me a message. I’m always happy to have a no-obligation chat.

Your future self will thank you.

Most homeowners don’t realise this...

The cheapest renovation loan may already be sitting inside your home.

🏡 Thinking about a new kitchen?
🛁 Dreaming of a modern bathroom?
🎨 Need to refresh tired spaces?
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Want more room for your growing family?

Instead of draining your savings or putting renovations on a high-interest credit card, you may be able to refinance your mortgage and unlock additional funds at a significantly lower rate.

For a limited time, eligible homeowners may be able to access:

✅ An extra $50,000 for renovations
✅ 2.5% fixed for 3 years on the renovation portion
✅ The opportunity to increase the value and enjoyment of your home

Here’s the real question:

If your home could pay for its own makeover, why wouldn’t you explore the option?

The families who build wealth through property aren’t always buying bigger homes.

Often, they’re improving the one they already own.

Let’s see if your home can work harder for you.

As parents, we spend so much time planning for our children’s future.

👉School.
👉Activities.
👉Family holidays.
👉Their dreams.

But have you ever stopped to ask:
“What would happen to my family if I couldn’t earn an income, became seriously ill, or wasn’t here tomorrow?”

Insurance isn’t about expecting the worst.
It’s about making sure the people you love most are protected, no matter what life brings.

Life Insurance ✅
Income Protection ✅
Trauma (Critical Illness) Insurance ✅
Health Insurance ✅

Because your children depend on you today, and their future may depend on the decisions you make now.

If you’d like to understand your options, I’m always happy to have a chat.

One of the biggest misconceptions in my industry?

“Once I buy a house, I don’t need my mortgage adviser anymore.”

It’s a bit like saying, “I bought a car, so I’ll never need a mechanic again.”

The funny thing is, getting the loan approved is often the easiest part.

Life happens after settlement.

👉Interest rates change.
👉Families grow.
👉Jobs change.
👉People start businesses.
👉Investment opportunities appear.
👉Insurance needs evolve.
👉KiwiSaver balances grow.

Yet many people lock in a mortgage and disappear for years.

I recently spoke with someone who had been paying a higher interest rate than necessary because nobody had reviewed their lending structure in over three years. Another client didn’t realise their growing family had outgrown the insurance cover they set up when they were single.

Financial advice isn’t a one-time transaction.

It’s more like having a GPS. Just because you’ve started the journey doesn’t mean you stop checking the route.

The best financial outcomes rarely come from one big decision.

They come from many small adjustments made over time.

This is exactly why I regularly encourage my clients to review their mortgage, insurance and KiwiSaver arrangements. Not because something is necessarily wrong, but because life rarely stands still. What was right for you two years ago may no longer be the best fit today.

A good review doesn’t always result in change.

Sometimes it simply provides peace of mind that you’re still on the right track.

And that’s valuable too.

So if you haven’t reviewed your finances in a while, consider this your friendly reminder:

The finish line wasn’t settlement day or policy issued.

That was just the beginning.
