Wellington’s long‑held belief in “jobs for life” is fading fast. Duncan Garner argues that the public service was never meant to be a protected bubble — it exists to serve taxpayers, not guarantee lifetime careers.

Over the years, he says, the bureaucracy swelled by nearly 17,000 roles, yet everyday New Zealanders saw little improvement in hospitals, schools, crime, or major projects. Instead, layers of strategy teams, comms units, and policy groups multiplied while outcomes worsened.

Now the government is finally trimming the system, not with a chainsaw but with a long‑overdue correction. Garner insists this isn’t the end of Wellington — just the end of the illusion that the public service is untouchable. Like everyone else, it must adapt.
