Amanda's Mortgage Story: Holiday Home
This couple have done an amazing job over the years — they managed to pay off their mortgage completely and even downsized in the last five years. With both of their children grown up and settled (Amanda actually arranged their children’s mortgages too, which was lovely!), they came back to Amanda with a new plan: they wanted to buy a holiday home by the coast to enjoy whenever they had some downtime.
They’re not quite ready to retire just yet, but they really wanted somewhere by the sea to escape to whenever they could. One of them has some investments lined up to mature over the next 5–10 years but didn’t want to dip into them too early if it could be helped. So the big question was: what’s the best way to make this dream happen?
Amanda looked at a few options with them and in the end they decided the simplest route was to remortgage their main home. This gave them the funds they needed without touching their investments too soon. Plus, Amanda made sure the mortgage was super flexible — so when those investments do mature, they can make overpayments and clear it down as planned.
Keeping repayments low was really important, so Amanda arranged an interest-only mortgage with a lender whose criteria fit perfectly. Now they have their seaside bolthole all ready to enjoy — exactly the calm retreat they wanted, with a plan that works for them both now and in the years ahead.
