Widely expected. Interest rates are on a course of rebalancing. We’re not likely to see rates return to pandemic levels anytime soon, but your mortgage renewals will be much more manageable.

The Bank of Canada has cut its benchmark interest rate for the third consecutive time, reducing it by 25 basis points to 4.25%. This widely anticipated move comes as inflationary pressures continue to ease, with inflation slowing to 2.5% in July. Despite the easing in shelter costs, Governor Tiff Macklem noted that while shelter inflation is starting to decrease, this doesn't necessarily mean house prices will fall. In fact, house prices could still rise slightly even as overall shelter inflation declines.

Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers highlighted the significant impact of Canada’s recent rapid population growth on the economy. She explained that while this surge initially relieved pressure on a hot labor market, the economy is now struggling to absorb the influx of workers. Although unemployment hasn't risen sharply, job vacancies have decreased, and the unemployment rate has begun to tick up. Rogers emphasized the importance of aligning labor supply with the economy’s capacity to absorb it.

Governor Macklem did not rule out further cuts but was cautionary about future moves "We haven't landed the economy yet. You know, the runway's in sight, but we haven't landed it yet."

Qualifications

• Aptitude for learning simple technology platforms.
• Experience in Mortgage industry an asset.

Widely expected, the Bank of Canada has held firm on the overnight lending rate…no changes to variable rates. In their announcement, they’ve dropped their hiking bias. An environment of rate cuts is starting to take shape.
