An important update on the private health insurance rebate.

The Senate yesterday removed from its agenda legislation proposing changes to the higher private health insurance rebate for Australians aged 65 and over. The Government has indicated it intends to bring the legislation back to Parliament, so the policy discussion is not over.

Australian Unity has been actively advocating throughout this process, informed by what our members and customers have told us about affordability, household budgets and the importance they place on maintaining their private health insurance.

Rebecca Harwood, CEO, Australian Unity Health Insurance, said the experiences shared by older Australians have brought an important perspective to this debate. As the Government considers its next steps, it’s important those voices continue to be part of the conversation.

We’ll continue to represent the interests of our members and customers, engage constructively with Government and the sector, and keep members informed as the next steps become clearer.

We’re proud to announce food-relief organisation Alex Makes Meals as the recipient of Australian Unity’s 20th Anniversary Grant.

Alex Makes Meals provides free meals to people experiencing food insecurity through partnerships with other community organisations. The two-year, $75,000 grant, will allow an increase in operations from four to five days per week.

"At Alex Makes Meals, we've always believed that a good meal can lead to more than that for the person receiving it. Food made with care opens the door to conversations, trust and connection with the wraparound support that person needs,” says Jen Shaw, CEO of Alex Makes Meals.

“The two-year investment enables us to open our kitchen on Fridays, producing up to an extra 30,000 meals a year. This is a partnership built on shared values, and we're so grateful to Australian Unity for the opportunity to be able to expand our operations and get more meals to those who need them the most"

This week Australian Unity is celebrating 20 years of community giving via the Australian Unity Foundation.

With total grants to our charity partners nearing $4 million, we are committed to making a difference and real impact through our grants, partnerships, workplace giving and volunteering opportunities.

Our panel event celebrated two decades of making a difference, with Australian Unity’s Group Executive, People & Culture, Dean Chesterman saying that the Foundation aims to make a positive impact on the real wellbeing of Australians.

“Our employees report experiencing pride in working for Australian Unity and in being able to participate in something outside of their daily work that is giving back.”

Long-term volunteer, donor and Australian Unity’s Head of Procurement, Andy Bee, agreed saying the opportunity to volunteer at Australian Unity’s retirement and aged care communities had been a pleasure.

“It's a positive karma you get from giving, whether it’s your time or money.”
