🎙️ IT'S COOL TO CRY – Talking About Mental Health Before Crisis
We often encourage people to check in on someone else and ask:
“Are you OK?”
But how good are we at checking in with ourselves and being able to say:
“I’m not OK. Can you listen?”

This week on The Grass is Greener, I had a really powerful conversation with Jack Davis, founder of It's Cool To Cry.

Jack shares the incredibly personal experiences that led him to start It’s Cool to Cry, his own journey through grief, and what he learned about the danger of trying to simply push difficult emotions away.

We also talk about something I really like about Jack's approach — being proactive about our mental health rather than waiting until we reach crisis point.
💬 Why talking about how we're feeling matters
🧠 Learning to recognise and articulate our emotions
👥 Why these conversations can sometimes be difficult for men
🁢 Jack's brilliant concept of “vulnerability dominoes”
❤️ Asking “Are you OK?” — and having the confidence to say “I'm not OK”
🛠️ Practical tools Jack uses in his It’s Cool to Cry workshops

I really enjoyed this conversation. At times it became quite personal for both of us, which perhaps demonstrates Jack's message better than anything else:
The more we practise talking openly about our mental health, the more normal those conversations can become.

🌱 What do you actually want your retirement to look like?
Not how much super do you have.
Not what investment option are you in.
Not even when are you going to retire.
👉 What do you actually want your life to look like?
This week on The Grass is Greener - Podcast, I chat with author, podcaster and retirement educator Bec Wilson - Epic Retirement about something we both feel strongly about — retirement planning needs to start with life. 🎙️
We talk about:
💰 Finding your own definition of “enough”
⏰ Creating more choice and flexibility in your 50s and 60s
✈️ Making the most of travel while you have the health and energy to enjoy it
💪 Investing in your health, purpose and happiness
💼 Rethinking what work and retirement might look like
🏡 The different stages of transitioning into retirement
📈 The growing focus on Retirement Income Solutions and whether greater certainty around future income can give people more confidence to actually enjoy their money
One line from Bec probably sums up our whole conversation:
💬 “Don’t talk to me about money until you’ve pictured life.”
I couldn't agree more.
Retirement planning isn't just about building the biggest possible balance. It's about understanding the life you want to live — and then using your money to help make it happen. 🌿

Did you know your adult children could pay tax on the super you leave them?

Many Australians assume super is completely tax-free once they're retired—but that's not always true.

This week's episode explains:
✔️ Who qualifies as a tax dependant
✔️ Why tax components matter
✔️ How to check your own super
✔️ Strategies that may help reduce future tax for your family

It's an important conversation for anyone planning the legacy they'll leave behind.

WOMEN IN SUPER

Why do women continue to retire with significantly less super than men — and is telling women to simply “save more” really the answer?

In the latest episode of The Grass Is Greener, I’m joined by Jo Kowalczyk, CEO of Women in Super.

Women in Super has been around for more than 30 years, supporting women within the superannuation industry while also advocating for better retirement outcomes for all Australian women.

Jo and I talk about why the gender super gap still exists — from lower average earnings and part-time work to career breaks and the enormous amount of unpaid caring work still undertaken by women.

We also discuss some of the progress that has been made, the need to better recognise unpaid care, and whether our retirement system truly reflects the way women actually live and work.

It’s a conversation about super — but also about work, caring, financial security and what a fair retirement system should look like.
