New article on my LinkedIn: the company folded, but the personal guarantee didn't get the memo. ✍️

Inside Small Business reports that court actions filed by non-Big-Four lenders hit a record high in the September quarter, according to Alares research. Insolvency firm Jirsch Sutherland is urging owners to get advice before personally guaranteeing short-term loans.

Short-term finance isn't the villain. It can be the right tool for a genuine, temporary cash gap. The risk is signing a guarantee without knowing exactly what it covers if the business doesn't make it.

In the article I look at what to check before you sign. Have a read.

Myth: shopping around for a business loan will wreck your credit score. 📉

It's a fair worry. Each formal credit application can be recorded on your credit file, and a lot of applications in a short time can make lenders cautious.

But shopping around doesn't have to mean applying everywhere. As a broker, I can look at your situation first and compare lenders' criteria and options before anything formal goes in. That way, when you do apply, it's with a lender that's a good fit.

So compare first, apply once, and apply well.

If you've been holding off because you're worried about your credit file, let's have a chat about how we can approach it.

New on my LinkedIn: the RBA made its Cup Day call yesterday — up 0.25% to 4.85%. Here's what to check on your loan this week. 🏇

The useful question now isn't what the economists said. It's what your lender does next. Variable loans and lines of credit usually reprice within a few weeks.

As a rough guide, every 0.25% on a $500k interest-only facility is about $104 a month. All five hikes this year together come to about $520 a month on the same loan. Not a disaster, but it's not nothing in December either.

In the article I run through what to check, when to review your rate, and why it's worth sorting a Christmas buffer before you need it. Have a read.

Pay PAYG instalments quarterly? A change has been proposed that's worth knowing about. đź“‹

The Government has announced that from 1 July 2027, businesses could choose to pay PAYG instalments monthly instead of quarterly. The ATO would also be able to require monthly instalments from businesses with a history of not meeting their tax obligations. These measures are not yet law.

For some businesses, smaller and more regular payments could make cash flow easier to manage. For others, being moved onto monthly instalments would mean less breathing room between payments.

Either way, now is a good time to keep lodgements and payments up to date and to put a little aside for tax each month, so the ATO bill isn't a surprise.

Your accountant is the one to talk to about the tax side. If cash flow around tax time is tight, I'm happy to help you look at your options.

Cup Day rate news: the RBA has lifted the cash rate by 0.25% to 4.85% today.

If your business has a variable loan, overdraft or line of credit, here's what that usually means. Your repayments will probably go up once your lender passes the rise on, often within a few weeks.

A few quick things worth doing now:
âś…Watch for your lender's notice so you know the new rate and when it starts
âś… Stress-test your cash flow with repayments at the new rate, plus a bit of buffer
âś… Check if your current facility is still the right fit, or if restructuring or refinancing could ease the pressure

The RBA says inflation is still too high and it'll keep watching the data, so it's smart to plan ahead rather than wait.

If you'd like a second set of eyes on your numbers, give me a shout. Happy to have a chat, no pressure.

New article on my LinkedIn: the quarterly super bill is gone, and so is the 90-day float. đź’¸

Since 1 July, super has to be paid every payday instead of quarterly. ScotPac's latest SME Growth Index found just 26% of SMEs felt fully prepared for the cash-flow impact, which means 74% weren't.

For a lot of businesses, those weeks between paying wages and paying super were quietly doing a job. Now it's a timing gap that comes round every pay run.

In the article I look at why it's a timing problem, not a profit problem, and how to match funding to your pay cycle rather than reaching for a lump-sum loan. Have a read.

"How long does business finance actually take?" It's one of the first things people ask me. ⏱️

The honest answer: it depends on the loan, the lender and how ready your paperwork is. A straightforward equipment or unsecured loan can move quickly. Property-backed deals usually take longer, because there are valuations, legal work and more checks involved.

Where things tend to slow down:
🔹 Financials or tax returns that aren't up to date
🔹 Missing statements or ID
🔹 Valuations and settlement paperwork for secured loans
🔹 Leaving it until a week before you need the money

My tip: start the conversation early, even before you're ready to sign anything. That way we can line up the right lender and get your documents sorted while there's still breathing room.

New article on my LinkedIn: when the freight costs nearly as much as the oven. đźšš

One Far South Coast cafe owner told the Bega District News that freight for replacing equipment in regional areas can nearly rival the cost of the equipment itself. Add fuel, rent, power and the odd closed road, and running a business out of town comes with its own costs.

In the article I look at how equipment finance can often include delivery and installation, so the freight bill doesn't come out of working capital. Have a read.

Myth: you have to put the house up to get a business loan. 🏡

Property security can help, but it's not the only way in. Depending on your business, there may be unsecured business loans, a line of credit, or funding based on your invoices or cash flow.

Each option has its own trade-offs in cost, limits and terms, so it's worth comparing before you sign anything.

If you'd rather keep the family home out of it, let's have a chat about what might suit your business.

New on my LinkedIn: the inflation figures land today, and the RBA makes its next rate call on Tuesday 3 November. Yes, that's Melbourne Cup Day. 🏇

I'm not tipping a winner. But if you've got a variable business loan, it's worth knowing what another 0.25% or 0.5% would do to your repayments before the decision, not after.

In the article I walk through a quick stress test and what to sort out now if things look tight. Have a read.
