In the small Limpopo community of Fobeni, colourful Shweshwe fabric moves under practiced hands - fold, pin, stitch - until a precious keepsake takes shape. Every finished piece tells a story of the woman who made it: her resilience and resourcefulness in a place where resources are often few.

This is Basadi, a programme of Tshega Christian Mission helping women break the cycle of poverty and create sustainable change for themselves and their families.

For many women in Fobeni, opportunities are scarce. Schooling often ends early, jobs are few, and caring for the home and children is all consuming.

Basadi meets them there: teaching women critical skills, and then helping them turn those skills into marketable businesses. The result isn't just a finished product. It's a woman who built something lasting, with her own hands.

The little village of Mumbwa, in western Zambia, has never had much fertile soil. Farming has always been a struggle here. But looking up, past the dry ground, this community had something else entirely - bees, humming in the trees overhead.

It took training with Possibilities Africa for the local pastors to see it: they didn't need to wait for better soil. They just needed to start with what was in their hands.

'Initially they built their own bee boxes,' explains Mergon's Surita Scholtz, during a recent visit. 'But now they use wooden boxes, which are far more durable.

Currently, they have ten hives - six of them occupied and producing rich, raw, unfiltered honey!'

It's a small start. And it's theirs.

Possibilities Africa has now trained more than 2,000 leaders across seven African countries, grounded in a strong biblical foundation. But it doesn't stop with theology. Leaders are also given practical, entrepreneurial tools - from farming to business development - that make sense in their local context and can grow into sustainable income for their families and communities.

Because transformation doesn't stop with one person. It spreads outward.

From a pastor, to a family, to a church, to a community.

Sometimes, it even starts with a few beehives.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Ziwani’s Keri-Leigh Paschal put this question to Mergon founder, Francois Van Niekerk, during their recent gathering of Western Cape Counsel groups in Stellenbosch.

His response: ‘Don’t be in a rush to make decisions - no matter how obvious they may seem to you. Pray about them. And once you’ve prayed, don’t be too quick to assume you’ve got your answer. Learn to wait on God. In our Mergon history there were countless times things turned out far better than we could have managed on our own wisdom. Simply because we prayed…and then waited on God for direction.’

Ziwani Counsel groups bring together business leaders who understand both the complexities of running a business and the desire to honour God in every aspect of life. They are high-trust spaces to be known, sharpened, and challenged by peers who are in it for the long run.

Stretching from Senegal to Sudan, the Sahel is a culturally rich and complex region. Poverty and political instability have shaped it for decades, and extremist violence in recent years has added further pressure. Since 2020, West Africa has accounted for six of Africa's nine successful coups, and millions have been displaced by conflict.

But this isn't the whole story. Across the Sahel, local leaders and ministries are faithfully responding, seeing people come to faith, leaders grow in capacity, and mission networks work together in new ways.

In collaboration with global peer funders, the West Africa Fund (WAF) was created to support that work, coming alongside the local leaders and ministries serving the region.

People with disabilities face overwhelming barriers to employment. More than 80% are unemployed or outside the labour force entirely (UN, 2023). In sub-Saharan Africa, over 90% of those who do work are in the informal sector, without stability, protection or fair wages.

Ministry partner Accessible Hope International is changing that story - facilitating the inclusion and transformation of people affected by disability, and opening doors to dignity, community, belonging and meaningful opportunity.

In Sierra Leone, women with disabilities gather through the GROW programme for Bible study and savings groups. Every five weeks, one member receives the pooled funds - enough to repair a roof, start a trade or pay a child's school fees.

In Tanzania, young adults at Step by Step Learning Centre train in hospitality, agriculture and craft skills - caring for livestock, preparing meals and making goods to sell. Along the way, they gain confidence and independence, not just vocational skills.

As Director Kim Kargbo puts it: ‘These stories are examples of what happens when we shift from seeing people with disabilities as recipients of aid to agents of transformation.’

When Stellenbosch High School approached MOI in 2021 about Tatum, a learner whose family was navigating a difficult season, it was clear that the future of a young person with exceptional potential was at risk.

Through MOI's assessment process, we confirmed what her teachers already knew — this was a learner with remarkable ability.

So MOI stepped in with a full scholarship, including school residence, giving Tatum something she hadn't had in a while: room to breathe, and the freedom to simply focus on being a student again.

Over the years, she embraced every opportunity available to her, becoming a mathematics tutor to younger learners and demonstrating the kind of leadership the MOI Program seeks to nurture.

In 2024, Tatum graduated as dux scholar at Stellenbosch High School — seven distinctions, a 92% average, and 100% in Economics.

Today, she is pursuing her dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

Her story is a reminder that behind every academic achievement is often a much deeper journey — one of faith, resilience and support.
