Last month Mergon CEO Pieter Faure attended the Redemptive Leadership conference at Common Ground church - a gathering of leaders from business, government, and the non-profit sector, wrestling together with what it means to bring genuine change to South Africa.
‘I was particularly challenged by Andy Crouch speaking about re-risking vs de-risking,’ says Pieter.
Andy suggested that as a leader or organisation gains capital, influence, and a proven track record, the natural instinct is to protect what's been built - to mitigate risk and play it safe. I can resonate with that, especially if you’ve incurred some battle scars along the way. And yet, if we're truly going to bring about the change we dream of, playing it safe may be the one thing we can’t afford.
Andy challenged us to re-risk - to freely place our accumulated resources, reputation, and organisational capacity back on the line, rather than using our success to ‘buy safety’. Not recklessly, but thoughtfully - matching the difficulty of the challenges we take on to our newly increased capacity.
It's the harder choice. But it’s also the path to true flourishing - for ourselves, and for the sake of those whose lives we long to see transformed.’
