South Africa has no shortage of talented young people, yet so many face limited opportunities. For students learning in a second language, those barriers run even deeper.

MOI exists to turn these barriers into doorways. Established by Mergon founder Francois van Niekerk, MOI offers holistic bursaries to high-potential learners from less-resourced communities, to complete their high school education in their home language. Beyond finances, the programme offers leadership training, mentorship, discipleship as well as ongoing academic support.

Says program manager, Jenene Petersen, ‘Since 2020, the program has maintained a 100% pass rate. We celebrate this achievement. Yet we see scholars finishing matric not as the end goal, but as the launchpad into a lifetime of purposeful, values-driven leadership.’

There are people in our cities who have forgotten that they even matter. MES hasn't.

Since 1986, MES (Mould Empower Serve) has been working in the inner cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha, and Kempton Park - providing services and partnerships that create sustainable pathways out of poverty and homelessness.

Their aim is to change the heart of the city. They do it by working on every level - from preschoolers to families at risk - addressing real needs: youth leadership, nutrition, mental health, career mentorship, and rehabilitation support.

38 years in, MES is still building spaces where dignity is restored, human potential is developed, and hope has a name.

Every leader needs people around them who will tell them the truth.

Few regions in the world hold as much complexity, or as much promise, as West Africa.

With a median age of just 18, it's one of the youngest regions on earth. Indigenous churches are expanding. And a generation of local ministry leaders is emerging.

At the same time, the challenges are real. Poverty, religious intolerance and political instability, particularly across the Sahel region, shape everyday life for millions. Six of Africa's nine coups since 2020 have happened here.

That tension – between urgency and hope – is what led us, together with global peer funders, to form the West Africa Fund.
The fund's initial focus is the Fulani – a nomadic people, 42 million strong, and largely unreached. We're supporting 11 locally led ministry partners serving among them.

The work is practical – training, development, and walking closely alongside local leaders. But what we're believing for goes deeper than that. Real hope and real transformation, in a region that feels remarkably ready for it.

More to come.

There’s something that Africa has to offer the world, which only Africa can. A wild and raw beauty that doesn’t beg for your attention – it simply demands it. Thousands of dialects and cultures, a continent pulsating with energy and creativity.

We love this continent and specifically the people we serve and partner with. That’s why our team travels - sometimes far off the beaten path - to connect with our partner ministries and learn and grow in what we do. The roads can be bumpy (or non-existent at times), the journey arduous, the cultures unfamiliar.

We go because we get to have a front row seat to what God is doing across this vast and beautiful continent. That’s a privilege we don’t take lightly and a journey we’ll choose time and time again.

Because we not only witness how others are being changed by the good news of the gospel - we’re being changed by it too.

Missio Dei Foundation develops practical models that address pressing challenges - and in South Africa, few challenges run deeper than the education crisis.

Missio Dei interrupts this cycle - training people from within the community to tutor just three Grade 3 learners at a time, targeting the foundation phase before the gaps become permanent.

These tutors support learners in math and reading using existing school facilities - working alongside qualified teachers who monitor every step, with discipleship woven into every session.

The result is a model that is cost-effective, scalable, and replicable - and it's making a tangible difference. Today MDE reaches 2,600+ learners every day across 29 schools.

Behind every number is a child better equipped to learn.

Last month, over 300 leaders from theological institutions across Africa gathered in Ethiopia - convened by ACTEA, the accrediting body for Christian higher education on the continent.

Mergon's Ofhentse Piet attended, and what stayed with him was the quality of thinking:

'These were leaders genuinely wrestling with what it means to equip the African church - addressing real gaps: trauma-informed theology, healthy pastoral leadership, and training that speaks in African voices.

It felt like a significant continental table. I came away deeply encouraged by the calibre of people willing to ask the hard questions and do the slow work of equipping well.'

Playing to win means accepting uncertainty. And uncertainty means risk. How do you know which risks are worth taking, and how do you approach them as opportunities rather than pitfalls?

Ziwani's podcast series ‘Risk’ explores the moments that define leaders and businesses alike. Through honest conversations with remarkable African leaders, each episode unpacks how they've navigated the collision of opportunity, fear, and ambition - and what they learned on the other side.

Thought-provoking, practical, and worth your time.

Boundary lines. Pleasant places. Humble courage.

Just a few words jotted down on a page - but behind these scribbles lies a whole journey of prayer and reflection. Lately, these words have felt like signposts, guiding our course.

Mergon has come through a significant season of change over the past few years. More than ever, we see ourselves as a partner - collaborating with global foundations, stewarding resources, and enabling greater impact together.

Partnership has always been at the heart of Mergon, but we’re now seeing it unfold on a larger scale. And, like the boundary lines that hold us in pleasant places, we’re not meant to do everything - just our part.

If a scribble is worth a thousand words, these are just a few of ours - a glimpse of a story still unfolding.
