We are pleased to share our latest research paper, “Sovereign Risk • ESG • Resilience: From Sovereign Ratings to Domestic Resilience,” now available on SSRN.

Dr Anushka Bogdanov recently presented on this topic during the “Sovereign Credit Ratings for Policy and Development Finance” capacity-building programme for United Nations Resident Coordinator Office economists and policy analysts, led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO).

The research develops an important question further:

When does an environmental or physical shock become material to sovereign credit risk?

Using the Nepal floods as an illustrative case, the paper develops a framework tracing:

ESG & physical risk → exposure & vulnerability → financial materiality → transmission channels → buffers & policy response → residual sovereign credit effect.

A central argument is that ESG risk and sovereign credit risk are not synonymous. A severe climate or environmental event does not automatically translate into sovereign credit deterioration. Its credit relevance depends on exposure and vulnerability, how the shock is transmitted through the economy and public finances, and the capacity of institutions and policy frameworks to absorb and respond to it.

The research contributes to the broader dialogue connecting ESG, sovereign risk, resilience and sustainable finance, particularly in Africa, emerging markets and developing economies.

How is global climate regulation reshaping South Africa's gold mining sector?
