What if a complaint could do more than resolve a dispute? In this clip from The Ombud Lens panel, Chief Ombud Leanne Jackson explains how complaints data is evolving into one of the most powerful early warning tools in the financial regulatory system. Patterns across complaint volumes can reveal product design flaws, misleading advice, financial literacy gaps, fraud trends and consumer vulnerabilities, before they cause widespread harm. A complaint isn't just a case. It is a data point that shapes fairer markets.

Episode 2! New on The Ombud Lens: 'Complaints Data Driving Fairer Financial Outcomes for South Africans.' A powerful panel bringing together Leanne Jackson (Chief Ombud, Ombud Council), Seipati Nekhondela (Director of Banking Development, National Treasury RSA) and Alicia Moses (Manager: Strategic Framework Consumer Education, FSCA South Africa). The conversation explores how complaints data is evolving from a record of past harm into an early warning system — identifying conduct risks, guiding regulation under the COFI Bill, and pointing to where customer education is needed most. This is the shift we have been talking about: outcomes over paperwork, prevention over clean-up, and evidence shaping fairer markets. Watch the full discussion on Asset TV: https://bit.ly/4u7L8k6

On 15 May, the Ombud Council engaged with Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) Consumer Champions in an educational workshop focused on the South African financial ombud system.

The session unpacked the role of financial ombuds, consumer rights, dispute resolution processes, and the importance of accessible and fair outcomes for financial customers.

Through initiatives like these, Consumer Champions are better equipped to share valuable information within communities and help strengthen consumer awareness and protection.
