Life insurance can create breathing room when a family is facing the unimaginable. For Racquel Pleasants, it provided a financial security blanket that helped her focus on her children and continue the life she and her husband had dreamed of.

Consider what financial flexibility would mean for your family.

We insure our houses. We insure our vehicles. We insure boats, jewelry, businesses and all kinds of things we've worked hard to own.

But what about the thing paying for all of it?

Your income.

Someone earning $75,000 a year with 25 working years ahead of them could potentially earn nearly $1.9 million during that time, and that's without assuming a single raise.

Now imagine that income suddenly disappears.

That's what I want people thinking about during Life Insurance Awareness Month. Life insurance isn't only about paying for a funeral. It's about helping protect the financial life your family was expecting you to help provide.

The mortgage doesn't disappear. Groceries don't disappear. Kids still grow up. College still comes. Your spouse still has to retire someday. Life keeps moving.

We spend a lot of time protecting the things our income buys.

Maybe we should spend a little more time protecting the income that makes all of it possible.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about life insurance is that it's expensive.

Sometimes it can be. But sometimes people are genuinely shocked when they see what term life insurance may actually cost.

Term insurance is pretty simple. You're purchasing protection for a specific period of time. Maybe you need a larger amount of coverage while the kids are young, while you have a mortgage, or during the years your family is most dependent on your income.

It doesn't have to solve every financial problem. Sometimes its job is simply to put a large amount of protection in place at a price that fits your budget.

And that's why I hate seeing someone assume they can't afford life insurance without ever actually looking at the numbers.

Don't let what you THINK something costs keep you from protecting your family.

Get the quote. Look at the options. Then make the decision.

You might be surprised.

Your family may inherit your memories, values and traditions—but life insurance can help prevent them from inheriting the financial strain of unpaid obligations. Coverage may help with debt like outstanding medical bills, student loans, and even credit card debt.

Review the obligations your family would need help covering.

Here's a number that stopped me in my tracks.

According to LIMRA, about 100 million Americans say they need life insurance or need MORE life insurance. Yet only 9.4 million individual life insurance policies were sold in 2024.

Think about that gap.

There are millions of people who already know they probably aren't properly protected, but for one reason or another haven't done anything about it yet. Maybe it's cost. Maybe they don't know where to start. Maybe they have something through work and assume it's enough. Or maybe life insurance just keeps getting pushed down the list because there is always something more urgent going on.

That's exactly why September is Life Insurance Awareness Month.

You don't have to buy something just because you have a conversation. But you should know what you have, what it actually protects, and what would happen financially to the people you love if tomorrow looked very different than today.

If you're part of that 100 million, let's at least have the conversation.

A financial professional looks beyond a single product. Your goals, income, debt, savings, family responsibilities and future plans all help shape the right protection strategy. Life insurance works best when it is considered as part of the whole financial picture.

Schedule time to review how protection fits into your broader plan.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, so I figured I should give all of my friends and family a little warning ahead of time…you may be hearing from me this month 😂

And I mean a lot of you.

I'm going to be making calls, sending texts, reaching out to people I haven't talked to in a while, and probably being a little more persistent than I normally am. So I apologize in advance if you start thinking, “Alright Jacob, enough already.”

But there's a reason I'm doing it.

If I'm going to spend an entire month talking about the importance of life insurance, I want to make sure the people closest to me have at least had the conversation. I want my friends and family to know what they have, understand what they have, and most importantly, know whether it's actually enough to protect the people they love.

Maybe you have coverage through work and have never really looked at it. Maybe you bought a policy years ago and life has changed since then. Maybe you've always thought life insurance was too expensive. Or maybe it's just one of those things you've been meaning to get around to.

That's okay. Let's talk about it.

Life happens. Families grow. Jobs change. Houses get bought. Businesses get started. Health changes. And unfortunately, sometimes things happen that none of us ever saw coming.

So yes, I'm probably going to bother some of you this September. 😂 But if one conversation helps one family realize they weren't properly protected, it's worth every call.

You've officially been warned!
