You winterized the boat. Drained the lines, pulled the battery, shrink-wrapped the hull. Then you called to cancel the insurance until spring.

That last step is the one that bites people.

A stored boat or RV still faces theft, fire, and rodent damage, and it faces all of it while nobody's looking. Six quiet months is plenty of time for a chewed wiring harness or a storage-yard break-in.

The biggest risk to a motorcycle rider isn't the bike. It's the other driver.

Riders spend hours picking gear, tires, and routes. Most spend zero minutes checking whether their policy covers what happens when the driver who hits them doesn't carry enough insurance to pay for it.

Washington requires liability coverage. It doesn't require enough of it. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is the part of your policy that closes that gap, and it's the part most riders skip.

Here's what nobody explains at orientation: your auto policy is tied to a garaging address. Move that car to Idaho, Oregon, or wherever for the school year and your coverage details can shift right along with it. Rates change. Sometimes gaps show up too.

Your car insurance handles the truck. It stops the second the ATV comes off the trailer.

Standard auto policies exclude off-highway vehicles. No liability if you clip another rider. No payout if the machine takes damage on a rock crawl gone wrong.

South Hill, the Valley, out toward Mount Spokane. Wherever you're riding this season, the machine needs its own policy.

Quick question. If your house flooded tonight, could you list what was in your living room? Your garage? The closet you haven't opened since spring?

Most people can't. And that's exactly the moment an insurance claim gets messy, not because the coverage wasn't there, but because nobody could prove what was.

The fix takes less time than making coffee. Walk through your house with your phone. Film every room. Note the big stuff out loud as you go: the TV, the instrument, the tools in the garage. Then get that video off your phone and into the cloud, so a lost phone doesn't mean a lost record too.

Do it this weekend. Before the trip, not after you're already filing a claim.
