Bob and Kathy are on a quest! Their quest - visit all 92 counties in the State of Indiana. Today, they are at county #52 - Shelby County!

Watching television one morning, they saw some information about different counties in the state, and decided it would be a bucket list item for them to visit all Indiana's beautiful counties. "We decided, heck, there's so much to see and do right here in Indiana, we'd better get started!"

Thanks for visiting with us today Bob and Kathy - safe travels, and I 'know' you'll be back soon - it was so much fun talking with you both today!

The Loper Elementary time capsule was a wonderful tribute to the Bicentennial of the United States of America. A great deal of hard work and preparation by Joan Gardner and her then 6th grade students. Blue River Career Programs students also assisted by planning and constructing the actual time capsule. A lot of great photos and memories in this album. Please share your memories if you were one of the 6th grade students, another grade student, parent, teacher, sibling or someone who watched this project grow!
I, personally, was a 1st grader in Miss Pauline Jones class,
Diane Miller Zachary was a student teacher at the time. My cat-eye marbles are in this time capsule. My brother, who was one of the 6th grade students in Mrs. Gardner's class, thought it was a good idea to donate my favorite marbles to the cause. Not that I'm bitter about it or anything ๐Ÿ˜‰
It was a very blustery day when this was buried in May, but our Shelby County community supported this endeavor - and it holds great memories for many, many people in our community.

The Shelby County Fair in Indiana has a deep agricultural history tracing back to an original farmer's market in 1840. Farmers gathered on the local courthouse square to show off their best crops and livestock, with prize money totaling just $45.

The fair grew and evolved through several distinct eras:
1874 Start: Legal organization took shape in 1873, and the first official fair under the Shelby County Fair Association was held in 1874. Future Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks even helped draft the fair's constitution.
1900s Carnivals: A massive "Grand Carnival" was held in September 1911, bringing a full-sized World's Fair Ferris wheel to town. The first official County Fair featuring exhibits and a carnival opened in October 1912.
1950s Revival: The fair ran annually until 1953, but was paused in 1954 and 1955. In 1956, the local VFW stepped in to take over the planning committee.
Modern Tradition: In 2012, a major fire tragically burned down the historic 1879 grandstand just weeks before the fair. By 2014, the community rebuilt the grandstands and fashioned it to resemble the original structure.
