Homestead Exemption Updates:
• Senate Bill 4 increases the general homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000.
• Senate Bill 23 increases the exemption for homeowners who are 65+ or disabled from $10,000 to $60,000.
• For eligible seniors and disabled homeowners, this could mean up to $200,000 in total exemptions, subject to voter approval of a constitutional amendment.
Potential Tax Savings:
• Early estimates suggest the changes could provide an average annual savings of $950 for qualifying seniors and disabled homeowners.
• The broader relief effort may benefit up to 5.7 million Texas homeowners, with an estimated average savings of $484 per year, depending on eligibility and individual circumstances.
