Fourteen years ago, Stuart Martin and his colleagues moved into a failed incubator at Harwell where, in his words, ‘there was nothing there.’

Today, more than 100 companies operate on the campus, new facilities continue to rise, and businesses such as Open Cosmos and MagDrive attract major investment.

Stuart describes the work through a memorable image. His team hacked a path through the jungle until somebody else could lay a road. Then they went looking for the next patch of jungle.

That idea runs through our conversation with the founding CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult and a 2026 UK Space and Satellite Personality of the Year nominee. We discuss growth capital, space-based solar power, talent in the AI era, orbital governance, and the responsibility to keep space serving people on Earth.

Are we planning for the ground infrastructure that our growing satellite constellations will require?

That's one of the questions at the heart of our latest SSPI podcast with Scott Mumford, CEO of Go Global Communications, one of our newest corporate members.

As LEO constellations expand, satellite networks need more gateways, in more locations, with increasingly demanding technical and operational requirements.

Scott explains why the ground segment is becoming more geographically distributed, what that means for operators, and how Go Global Comms is helping build and maintain the infrastructure connecting satellites to Earth.

He also shares why Go Global Comms has joined SSPI and what the company hopes to contribute to our global professional community.

Get access to a professional network spanning every sector of the satellite industry

SSPI has spent more than 40 years serving the space and satellite industry. For most of that time, the industry looked a lot like commercial satellite. It still does, in many ways. But it also looks like launch, like earth observation, like in-space services, like defense and civil applications, like the emerging companies building the infrastructure that did not exist a decade ago.

The professionals doing that work deserve the same professional home the rest of the industry has had for decades. That is exactly what SSPI Corporate Membership offers.

Your company's people get access to a professional network spanning every sector of the industry. Your executives get first consideration for SSPI podcasts, roundtables, and industry conversations. New corporate members this year are invited onto the SSPI Podcast directly. And your company gets 30% off SSPI event and content sponsorships, including the Night of Excellence in Washington, DC and the Better Satellite World Awards Dinner in London.

The space industry is no longer waiting to be taken seriously. SSPI is where the people building it come together.

“You deserve to be here.”

Carol Craig has built a career around going places she did not originally expect to go.

She became one of the first women eligible to fly in U.S. Navy combat aircraft. She founded Craig Technologies. She built Sidus Space and took it public.

And along the way, she learned something about change: sometimes leadership means being willing to adapt before you know exactly where the new path leads.

In the latest SSPI Podcast, presented by SSPI-WISE, Carol joins Lyn Chassagne for a remarkably candid conversation about risk, resilience, trust, women in leadership, family, mentorship, and finding the place where you can lead.

What do you do when you know you are ready to lead, but no one recognizes you as a leader yet?

Carol’s answer ultimately comes back to action. Find the place where you can lead. Take the risk. And remember that you deserve to be there.

What advice would you give someone who is ready to lead and still waiting for the opportunity?
