The season for delivering State Farm Fire Safety Kits to our local fire departments is underway.

Fire prevention starts with education, and our youngest learners are an important place to begin.

Chief Ann Lukens of the Unaka Volunteer Fire Department and volunteer firefighter Holly Willis stopped by Steven Aft State Farm to help spotlight that message. Along with Steven Aft and Jake, they even donned the State Farm kids’ fire hats in support of teaching children the importance of fire safety and prevention.

We are grateful for the local firefighters who continue to help keep our communities informed, prepared, and safe.

When Superintendent Owen with Cherokee County Schools asked if Steven Aft State Farm could help provide breakfast for nearly 500 staff members, Steven’s answer was simple: “Yes, we will.”

Then we reached out to our village.

Mike Klikus, Store Manager at Ingles in Murphy, stepped up. Lance Bristol, CCS Principal, helped connect with Coca-Cola for a water donation. And Samantha Smus, General Manager at Murphy Dunkin’, came through in a big way with more Munchkins, donuts, and coffee than you could imagine.

By the time it all came together, three vehicles were packed and ready to go.

This is what community looks like when people say yes, make a few calls, and step up for one another.

Remote staff felt right at home here in Murphy, NC.

From the flexibility of Hampton Inn as plans shifted, to Sandra Wilson’s warm welcome at Glitz and Glam, Brooke Adams’ creative touch with the baby shower decor, adorable treats from Crafted Dough, and the Chop House team finding a way to accommodate two baby showers at once, our local businesses helped make the visit memorable.

By the time the team headed home, they left with a better sense of the region we call home, the local Steven Aft State Farm team, and the kind of hospitality that makes this community special.

Murphy opened its arms and made everyone feel welcome.

At Steven Aft State Farm, we take our community shout outs seriously, and Starry Farm has captured our attention in a growing way.

This small regenerative farm in Hayesville, NC, is owned by Zhigang Zhang, known as Farmer Z, and watercolor artist Qinghong Wei. At their recent fifth anniversary gathering, they planted a seed that beautifully reflected community at its best.

Neighbors, guests from surrounding counties, and even visitors from across state lines gathered to share food, knowledge, creativity, and connection.

“We thought we were here to learn self-sufficiency, but instead we learned community-sufficiency.”

That may be the most meaningful bumper crop of all. People are hungry not only for the skills to care for themselves, but also for the relationships that allow us to care for one another.

Thank you to Z and Q of Starry Farm, Common Grounds, and grassroots leader Karah Thompson for embracing the art of bringing people together.

A shout out to the Cherokee County Arts Council and MountainTrue for a strong collaboration connecting the arts, nature, and the greater community.

CCAC’s current Center Gallery exhibition, Intertwined: humanity, art, and nature, brings together five regional artists whose work reflects our relationship with the natural world and the beauty of the Southern Blue Ridge landscape.

With MountainTrue as Gallery Sponsor, the partnership feels especially meaningful. Their work to protect our forests, safeguard clean water, and support healthier communities is closely connected to the places, people, and landscapes that inspire so much of our region’s art.

This exhibit is a reminder that the arts do more than decorate a community. They help us notice what matters, celebrate what we share, and imagine how we can care for it together.
