Occupational Therapy, University of Minnesota The U of M OT program has led the OT profession nationally and internationally since it began in 1946.

Our graduates use a science-driven, evidence-based approach to help people participate in daily activities and live as meaningfully as possible. The University of Minnesota’s Occupational Therapy (OT) program is the only public doctoral‐level OT program in Minnesota and one of the oldest OT programs in the United States. Our graduates use a science-driven, evidence-based approach to help children

and adults who have physical, cognitive, emotional, social or environmental impairments participate in activities that they value, achieve life goals, and live as meaningfully as possible. We offer a 37-month, 116 credit, graduate-level professional program completed over nine semesters. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for the Occupational Therapist, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this examination, the graduate will be an occupational therapist, registered (OTR). Our lengthy history delivering curriculum in a hybrid learning format – both in-class and online – has contributed to outstanding academic outcomes. The OT program’s graduation rate is close to 100 percent, and employers in a variety of settings are actively seeking to hire our graduates to improve the life skills of the people they serve.

Congratulations to Corey McGee, PhD, MS, OTR/L, CHT, FAOTA, for being awarded the Judy Bell-Krotoski “Grab the Evidence” Grant for 2026. His project is entitled: Trapeziometacarpal Arthrokinematics of Common Orthoses for Persons with Early Stage Trapeziometacarpal Osteoarthritis and Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Collapse.

The UMN OT Program is piloting a mentorship program called ConnectOT. The goal of this program is to pair first year OT students with occupational therapists who share career interests and/or life experiences for ongoing conversation, networking, and professional development.
