A Miami homeowner says the city tried to force him to give up part of his front yard just to get a routine building permit — with no payment.

Chad Trausch applied to add space to his home for his growing family. The city responded that he would only get the permit if he granted public use rights to a large strip of his front yard, even though there was no formal plan to use it. When he refused, the project stalled and costs skyrocketed.

A lawsuit claims this is an unwritten policy in Miami that could impact 1,000+ homeowners, allowing the city to take private land without compensation. Trausch is fighting back, saying it violates basic property rights.
