The U.S. once made a 20-cent coin.

In 1875, the U.S. Mint introduced the Twenty-Cent Piece.

The problem? It was extremely close in size and appearance to the quarter, which made the two coins easy to confuse.

The denomination didn’t last long. Coins were struck for circulation for only two years—1875 and 1876—with additional proof-only issues in 1877 and 1878.

Today, that short-lived experiment is a fascinating piece of U.S. coin history.
