When a friend or family member is arrested in Fresno, the first question is where they are.

Start with the Fresno County Sheriff's inmate search. It's free, and a last name is all it needs.

Fresno County runs three jail buildings downtown: the Main Jail at 1225 M Street, the North Annex and the West Annex. The county decides who goes where, and the inmate record shows which building.

No record yet? A recent arrest can take a while to reach the system, and an empty search doesn't by itself mean they've been released. Call us and we'll help you track it down.

Once you know where they are, a licensed agent checks the bail the court set and tells you what the bond would cost before you commit to anything.

We put the rest in one place on our new website: the search link, every building's address, and the Sheriff's rules for visits, mail and money.

Is a bail bond premium refundable?

No. The premium, also called the bail fee, is the percentage you pay the agent. It's fully earned once the bond is posted at the jail or filed with the court. That's according to California law and the Insurance Code.

It's a fair question, and here's the part many families don't know.

The bond stays in place for as long as the case is active. It ends when a determination is made: the case is dismissed, the person is ordered into diversion, the person is sentenced or remanded to custody, or the bond is exonerated.

One day or three years, it doesn't matter.

So before anyone signs, ask the agent to walk through what the premium covers and what the co-signer takes on. A licensed agent will go through the agreement with you before anything is signed.

Co-signers (indemnitors) become financially responsible for the full penal amount of the bail if the defendant fails to appear. Speak with a licensed agent for full terms before signing.

Is a bail bond the only way out of jail?

No. California has five basic forms of release, and a bail bond is one of them. Most families never hear about the other four.

1. Cash bond. You pay the full bail amount to the court, in cash.

2. Surety bond. A licensed bail agent posts a bond at your request. You pay the agent a premium instead of the full bail.

3. Own recognizance. The court releases the person on a promise to appear. No money changes hands.

4. Citation release. The arresting officer issues a citation instead of booking the person into custody.

5. Property bond. The court records a lien against property instead of taking cash.

The surety bond is the one a licensed agent can provide, and it's the one Lucky Bail Bonds writes.

Each form has different requirements. If you want to know how they differ, call and ask. There is no obligation at all for inquiring, and requests for information are always free.

Can you bail someone out without coming into the office?

In many cases, yes. Lucky Bail Bonds can often handle the paperwork and fees over the phone and by email. If your friend or family member is in the Fresno County Jail and you're at home in Clovis or Madera, you may not need to get in the car at all.

Here's how it goes.

You call and give us their full name and the jail or county holding them. Don't know which one? We'll track it down for you.

The agent checks the bail the court set and tells you what the bond would cost before you commit to anything.

If you decide to go ahead, you can come into our Fresno office, or in many cases we'll do the paperwork with you over the phone and online. Some bonds need something done in person, and the agent will tell you up front.

Then we post the bond at the jail or file it with the court, whichever the case needs.

Requests for information are always free. Call us anytime 24/7: (559) 268-4646.

What should you look for in a bail agent?

Someone who knows the rules, explains them straight, and tells you what a bond costs before you sign anything.

Barry David Pearlstein owns Lucky Bail Bonds, here on Van Ness Avenue in Fresno.

He served three terms as president of the California Bail Agents Association and more than 20 years on its board. He has also led the Bail Association of Central California.

The Superior Court of California has certified him as an expert witness in bail matters. That means a court accepted him as qualified to explain how bail works, under oath.

The office writes more than the everyday bond: state surety bonds, federal bonds, appeal bonds and large bonds. Federal cases come with their own paperwork and court rules, so say it's a federal case when you call.

You can call and ask how bail works without agreeing to anything. Information is always free.

Here's something nobody needs to know until they suddenly do: federal cases don't work like county cases. Different court, different hearing process, and many bail agents simply don't handle them. We do, and we have for a long time. So if someone in your family's being held on a federal matter, you're not starting from zero trying to find somebody who actually understands the process. Fresno, Clovis, Madera, and throughout California. (559) 268-4646. Lucky Bail Bonds. CA Bail Agent License #1591579.

Something most people don't know about us: there's a notary public at our Fresno office on Van Ness, and you don't have to be a bail client to use it. Documents, affidavits, powers of attorney, whatever ordinary paperwork life's handed you this week. Give us a call first so we can make sure our notary is here when you come by. 1243 Van Ness Avenue, Fresno. (559) 268-4646. Lucky Bail Bonds. CA Bail Agent License #1591579.

"Who's going to find out?" It's one of the first questions people ask us, and honestly, it's a fair one. Nobody grows up planning to call a bail agent, and the worry about it getting around can leave a family sitting on their hands for hours while things get worse. So let's be plain about it. We don't discuss your case with anyone who isn't on the paperwork. We don't post about our clients. We don't put anybody's name on anything public. Your neighbors, your boss, and your church aren't hearing it from us. Fresno, Clovis, Madera. (559) 268-4646. Lucky Bail Bonds. CA Bail Agent License #1591579.

Here's the part families don't see coming: the release is the beginning, not the end. That bond stays active until the case is over, which means every single court date counts. Miss one and the court can forfeit the bond and issue a bench warrant. Now your loved one is at risk of being arrested and the co-signer is responsible financially. That is why we remind our clients about their court dates, and we pick up the phone when they've got questions about them. That's not extra. That's the job. Fresno, Clovis, Madera. (559) 268-4646. Lucky Bail Bonds. CA Bail Agent License #1591579.
