If you’re planning a summer celebration, you may want to rethink balloons this year. Helium prices have more than doubled since February due to supply disruptions in the Middle East, where much of the world’s helium is produced and shipped.
But balloons are only part of the story. Helium plays a big role behind the scenes — from cooling MRI machines to helping make the chips in our phones and keeping data centers running smoothly. And unlike crops that can be replanted, helium doesn’t regenerate, which means recovery takes years, not months.
For now, streamers, flowers, and other festive decorations might be the easier (and cheaper) way to go. And if anyone asks why there aren’t balloons at the party, you’ll have a fun little helium fact to share. 🎈
