Your primary liability insurance does not cover your cargo.

They're two completely separate coverages, and most
owner-operators don't find out until after a claim is denied.

If you're hauling freight without Motor Truck Cargo insurance,
that load is unprotected. Lost, stolen, or damaged in transit?
That's coming out of your pocket.

Ask your broker if you have both. If you're not sure, that's the answer.

You can't operate without it. But do you actually know what it covers and what it doesn't? Most fleets don't. Watch this.

Standard cargo policies don't cover everything.

Alcohol, to***co, and certain high-risk goods typically require a specialized policy β€” separate from your standard Motor Truck Cargo coverage.

If you haul any of these and have never specifically confirmed your coverage with a trucking specialist, there's a real chance your cargo isn't protected.

One conversation with the right broker can tell you exactly where you stand.

The FMCSA just warned Congress that the current federal minimum liability requirement for trucking has not changed since 1985. Today, that minimum covers less than 1.5% of the median nuclear verdict in trucking cases. Most fleets don't know this. And most general agents aren't telling them.

Here's what's moving in the trucking insurance market this April:

- THE FMCSA INSURANCE GAP: Federal minimum liability limits are dangerously outdated. If your coverage is sitting at the bare minimum, you may be significantly underinsured.
πŸ”— freightwaves.com/news/fmcsa-spotlights-truckings-multi-million-dollar-insurance-gap

- CARGO THEFT SURGED 60%: Verisk CargoNet analysis shows cargo theft losses jumped 60% year over year. High-value loads and specific freight corridors are being targeted most. If your cargo limits haven't been reviewed recently, now is the time.

- CARRIERS ARE TIGHTENING: Insurance companies are becoming more selective about the risks they write, especially for fleets with prior losses. Fewer carriers competing for your business means higher premiums if you're not working with a specialist who knows where to look.

- TELEMATICS NOW AFFECTS YOUR RATE: Insurers are using in-cab cameras, telematics data, and safety records to evaluate risk and set premiums. Fleets with documented safety programs are being rewarded.

International Roadcheck 2026: Is Your Fleet Ready for the 72-Hour Blitz?

From May 12–14, 2026, the CVSA will conduct its 38th annual International Roadcheck across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This year’s high-intensity enforcement focuses specifically on two critical safety areas: ELD integrity (falsification/tampering) and cargo securement.

What you need to know for this year's focus:
ELD Integrity: After more than 58,000 log falsification violations were cited last year, inspectors are on high alert for data manipulation, "ghost" driving, and unauthorized edits.

Cargo Securement: It’s not just about tight straps. Inspectors will examine the condition of tie-down devices, anchor point integrity, and even the way loose dunnage is secured.

The April 14 Deadline: If you are using a revoked ELD (such as GTS, UTRUCKIN, or ELD365), you must replace it by April 14, 2026. Using a revoked device after this date means an immediate out-of-service order during the Roadcheck.

Acing the inspection isn't about luck; it's about preparation and professional discipline. Don't let a preventable violation park your truck and impact your safety score. πŸ›£οΈ

πŸ”—

The countdown to CVSA's International Roadcheck is on. Motor carriers and commercial drivers should begin preparing now to ensure a smooth experience.

Only one is actually protected.

The difference?
How the policy is structured.

Correct limits.

Accurate operation classification.

Coverage isn’t just a document.
It’s your safety net.

Let’s review yours the right way.
