Hey, can I borrow your car for an hour? 🔑🚗
It happens all the time, a relative visits from out of town, a neighbor needs to run to the store, or a friend takes a turn at the wheel during a long drive. But do you know what actually happens to your insurance if they get into an accident?
There’s a huge misconception that insurance follows the person driving. The reality? In Michigan, auto insurance follows the vehicle. If you lend your car to a friend and they get into a crash, your policy is the primary coverage. That means:
1️⃣ You are responsible for paying your collision deductible out of pocket.
2️⃣ The claim goes on your insurance record, which can impact your future rates.
3️⃣ If the damage exceeds your policy limits, your personal assets could be exposed.
Does this mean you can never lend your car?
Not at all! Standard policies usually cover permissive use for occasional borrowing. However, if someone in your household or a friend drives your car on a routine basis, they must be added as a listed driver on your policy. If they aren't listed, an insurer could deny the claim completely.
