One thing January reinforced is how quickly market leadership can change.

Stocks finished the month higher, while shifting expectations around the Federal Reserve sparked significant moves in areas like precious metals. It’s early, but historically, a positive January has often been a helpful signal for the months that follow.

More broadly, diversification continues to matter as leadership extends beyond a narrow group of stocks.

Here’s how we’re interpreting these early developments as 2026 begins:

Markets reacted sharply to political concerns early last week, then recovered just as quickly.

That dynamic has repeated itself many times over the years. While policy proposals can drive short-term volatility, long-term market performance has consistently been driven by fundamentals.

This week’s market commentary walks through that context:

Last week, the Collective team gathered in Wimberley for an offsite strategy retreat focused on reflection, alignment, and planning for the future. We spent time reviewing the past year, clarifying our long-term vision, and identifying opportunities to continue strengthening the firm.

The conversations centered on how we grow thoughtfully, support one another as a team, and deliver an even more engaging, consistent experience for our clients. The retreat helped ensure we’re aligned around our priorities and positioned to serve clients with intention and excellence in the years ahead.

Of course, it wasn’t all work. The retreat also delivered plenty of fun — including a memorable dinner at Tillie’s in Dripping Springs, an intense game of Spoons that culminated in a dramatic Adam vs. Nolan showdown, relaxed campfire conversations, a classic game of P-I-G, trivia, and a variety of team-building activities. It was the perfect mix of strategy, connection, and laughter — and a great way to kick off planning for what’s next.

The market is off to a solid start in 2026, but the headline gains don’t tell the full story.

Market participation is broadening beyond last year’s leaders, leadership is rotating, and inflation data remains uneven beneath the surface. With earnings season underway, the next few weeks may offer clearer signals on whether this rally has staying power.

Here’s how we’re thinking about what’s driving markets right now:
