🏦 The cutting cycle is over. Here's what that means for your mortgage.

OCR stays at 2.25% — and the next move is up, not down.

Wholesale rates have already jumped, before the RBNZ has done anything.

In December, everyone decided to fix longer terms at the same time — that rush of demand pushed swap rates up 40-60bps almost overnight. The market didn't wait for the central bank.

Three takeaways from today's announcement:

✅ The bottom was late 2025. That window is gone.
✅ Inflation is stuck at 3.1% — power bills, council rates, airfares. Not stuff that fixes itself quickly.
✅ The 2-year rate has basically priced in the hiking cycle already. It's not falling back from here.

The question has changed. It's not "when do rates bottom out" anymore — it's "how do we structure your lending so you're not all rolling off at the same time when they're higher."

RBNZ lowers the OCR to 3% - the lowest it's been since August 2022!
This is welcome news to current and future homeowners alike, with expected flow-through from this (and previous cuts) to really start taking effect over the next 6 months.
The RBNZ also indicated potential further easing (cuts to the OCR), but that is data-dependent at this stage.
