Kingdom Resources' Autumn Panui hot off the press!
The good news: we've moved to 246 Lyttelton Street, with grateful thanks to Rata Foundation and South West Baptist Church. The bad news? a funding hole still threatens cuts to core services to the community, at a time of high demand. Getting feedback like this really helps the 'why do we do what we do' as a financial mentor.

Our team of financial mentors are amazing people and love their roles supporting clients and offering hope. As an organisation we are struggling to survive in the light of government funding cuts. Can you join our whanau by sponsoring client sessions, a money education course or our women's confidence building course? If so, we'd love to hear from you :) www.kingdomresources.org.nz

Worried about their debt, Jan and Pete knew they could do things better but needed some direction. They wanted to put a plan in place to get on top of their money and start to put money aside for different upcoming expenses.

They also learned about saving for an ‘emergency’ fund and decided to start one immediately. Several months later, Pete had an ill relative in the north island and, thanks to their emergency fund, was able to fly there without stressing about the money. As soon as he was home, the couple started to ‘top up’ their emergency fund once more, as they saw what a huge relief it had provided during an already stressful time.

Emergency funds are one of the many subjects a skilled financial mentor can talk about. Support provided is rarely just about the budget and often includes advocacy, debt management, goal setting and much more. Over the past few months we’ve supported someone who was on the brink of losing his house, we’ve helped clients navigate Work and Income and IRD ensuring that clients are getting what they are entitled to, we’ve supported a young dyslexic mum to get her car licence (-something she thought was impossible), and helped a young man to achieve his goal to buy a car.

Congratulations Kingdom Resources' David Baines and Fincap's Jake Lilley for highlighting the desperate need for the financial mentoring services to be better funded on RNZ today. With nearly 50% of services losing government funding in 2024, including Kingdom Resources who had previously had nearly 80% funding, many services have disappeared or have that threat hanging over them. Crazy at a time when demand for financial mentoring is escalating, including more and more two income families, reported Baines. FinCap is lobbying government for a levy to be imposed on financial sector to help fund budgeting services, like they do in Australia and the UK - a levy that should have been in place years ago. The complexities of cases that financial mentors see is continually increasing, highlighting the continued need of highly experienced financial mentors who are able to support and advocate for their clients at a time of great stress. Financial mentors say organisations that benefit from their services should be willing to pay a levy.

Some people see financial mentoring as just about a budget. It's so much more. The stress and strain of money worries seep into our everyday wellbeing. When the financial burden is eased, stress reduces, we can think more clearly and begin to hope again. Love this quote from one of our amazing clients.

Make your investment have a great impact in the community. By investing in a charitable deposit and choosing Kingdom Resources, you will be part of making a difference in the lives of 1700 people this year. https://www.christiansavings.co.nz/personal/charitable-deposits

We are very thankful to our existing supporters who invest in Christian Savings and the equivalent of interest they would have earned is donated to Kingdom Resources instead. With government funding lost and the demand for our mahi as high as ever, we really appreciate every dollar that can enable us to support hundreds of whanau in the community to have hope for the future.

Your money can really make a difference to people burdened by debilitating financial stress - many who would never have had to seek support before. Just love hearing the amazing stories of women graduates of our 'Taking the First Step' course. "Transformational" is one of the many words used to describe its impact on attendees' lives. Awesome to see how confidence grows as the course progresses. "This course is a pot of gold," said one attendee. :) Beneficiary Advisory Service (BAS) FinCap Stepping Stone Trust, Canterbury Birthright Canterbury Visionwest Community Trust PIPS Pregnancy Infancy Parenting Support South West Baptist Church The Neighbourhood Trust Bishopdale Community Trust Phillipstown Community Hub Christchurch City Council Christchurch Methodist Mission Citizens Advice Bureau Christchurch Area Compassion Trust Shirley Community Trust

How to have fun with friends without spending money? Loved this article written by Koren Helbig. She says on a tight budget hanging out with friends always meant 'forking out', so she started suggesting alternatives. 8 years of 'thrifty fun' and she's now with a solo mortgage. https://www.rnz.co.nz/life/lifestyle/how-i-have-fun-with-friends-without-spending-money?cid=newsletter

By focussing on spending time with friends, rather than money, Koren Helbig learned the art of frugal socialising while living in Spain.

Great to see a new supermarket competitor to help keep food costs down. One of our team checked it out. Her verdict? Definitely worth a look for meat and veg if you're a local to the Belfast area.
