Huge thank you to SWBC's Manda for leading a special session on our Taking the First Step programme. Our wonderful women used papercraft to create and display a favourite quote that resonated with them on the course. A lovely keepsake from TFS as a little reminder of something significant or special they learnt at TFS.
Thanks to Manda for sharing her skills and expertise with us. What a great collaboration with a lovely result ❤️South West Baptist Church

Report reinforces what our Financial Mentors are seeing - the growth of poverty in our seniors that is just not acceptable.

Tens of thousands of New Zealanders over the age of 65 are experiencing material hardship and can't afford basic necessities including healthy food and clothing, a new report has found.

Ever noticed how money in your everyday account has a habit of disappearing? 👀

That's one reason many people keep their emergency fund in a separate account. It's not about self-control. It's about setting yourself up for success.

Read why it works and how to get started: sorted.org.nz/blog/where-should-you-keep-your-emergency-fund-why-a-separate-account-wins/

Have you an emergency fund? What is it and how do you get one? A $1,000 emergency fund is a great start, says Julie, Kingdom Resources, a very experienced financial mentor. Check out what else she has to say about savings and spending on today's RNZ's Thrift Episode. https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/thrift/season-8/building-an-emergency-fund

What happens when your car breaks down or you suddenly need the dentist? We should all have an emergency fund to cover those unexpected bills but how many of us actually do? Katy Gosset looks at how to get started.

So special to hear how connected and confident a new immigrant now feels, thanks to our confidence, pre-employment course, "Taking the First Step". It really is a special programme, and it's always amazing to see the growth in women who attend from Day 1 to Day 10. This course is totally dependent on donations and philanthropic trusts and is run - subject to funding - twice a term in school-friendly hours. If you are able to help us to empower more women though this programme, please donate today and put 'TFS' in the reference. https://kingdomresources.org.nz/donate-now/

Our Sausage Sizzle turned up on the heat on Saturday at Mitre 10 Mega Hornby on such a cold day. Thank you so much to everyone for supporting us and of course to Mitre 10 as well! Awesome to see old friends come and have a chat too (and donate!) Shout out to KR Team crazy enough to brave the weather and run it: Jacinta, Bryce, Alyssa, Jenny, Vaughan and Sarah. All funds raised are going towards running our money and kai fun sessions in the community. :)

Our give a little page is still open, so there's still time to buy a 'virtual' sausage! :)

Come down to Hornby Mitre 10 Mega this Saturday 1 August from 9 - 4 pm and buy or sausage or two to help us raise funds to run our "Money and Kai" or "Cook 'n' Save" sessions! We run these for many community organisations including Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities Avonhead Community Trust, City Mission and more. But we need funds to make sure these impactful courses continue, supporting many in our community to make ends meet. Financial mentoring really helps to make a difference in the lives of individuals and whanau. This report is a great reminder of the huge need for our services in the community - a growing need that is incredibly under-funded. Being a financial mentor is a vocation, it takes someone with great empathy, good listener, huge knowledge and experience. The role is very under-valued, and the difference in can make to a family can be absolutely life-changing (and sometimes life-saving) for many. Our latest financial mentoring statistics reflect cost of living pressures and the need for increased and ongoing sustainable funding for financial mentoring.

Today started well! Paid $2.74 for a litre of petrol, thanks to the Gaspy App (and NPD). Nearly .20c cheaper than local station and, even better, only had to do a very slight detour to get it (less than 1km!) 🤩https://www.gaspy.nz/ Definitely worth looking at before buying petrol.

How to stop worrying (and not sleeping) at 2.00am each night

Worrying at 2.00am can often feel overwhelming.

Thoughts often become louder in the quiet of the night, and worries that seemed manageable during the day can suddenly feel urgent and impossible to solve. The challenge is that the brain is tired at this hour, making it harder to think clearly or calmly. Instead of trying to “force” yourself to stop thinking, it is often more helpful to gently redirect your mind and body toward rest.

One practical strategy is to avoid problem-solving in bed. If your mind keeps replaying conversations, mistakes, or future worries, remind yourself that 2.00am is not the best time for clear decisions.
Try saying silently, “I can think about this tomorrow.” Some people find it helpful to keep a notebook beside the bed and briefly write down the thought before setting it aside for the morning.

Grounding techniques can also interrupt worry. Focus attention on your senses by noticing five things you can feel, four things you can hear, or the rhythm of your breathing. Slow breathing, such as inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six, can help calm the nervous system and reduce mental intensity.

Finally, practicing self-compassion is important. Many people experience nighttime rumination, especially during periods of stress, grief, anxiety, or change. Resting quietly is still restorative, even if sleep does not come immediately. The goal is not perfect sleep, but creating enough calm and safety for the mind to settle again over time.
