Pump or plug? For a business doing 2,000km a month, a typical petrol SUV comes in at around $551 at the pump while a comparable EV is closer to $121 at the plug.

Over a 24-month period, that difference could add up to roughly $10,300 staying in your business.

The figures are based on current NZ fuel and electricity pricing. Real-world running costs vary with the vehicle, the kilometres, and how you charge, but the example is enlightening.

For fleets weighing up where electric fits, the numbers are a useful place to start the conversation.

The new Drive Electric State of the Nation 2026 report is live, and it reframes electric transport in New Zealand as an economic, infrastructure and energy-security story for the country.

A few key highlights from the report:

⚡️ Globally, one in four new cars sold is now electric. In China, it is one in two. New Zealand sits at 11 percent of new car sales electric and 3.3 percent total fleet EV share.

⚡️ Australia has overtaken New Zealand for the first time after introducing its New Vehicle Efficiency Standard in 2025, ending a long stretch where this country was ahead.

⚡️ EV drivers in New Zealand are paying the equivalent of 40 cents per litre to fuel their vehicles, which is less than half the cost of petrol.

⚡️ New Zealand holds structural advantages that most countries cannot match. Around 88 percent of electricity here comes from renewable sources, and the grid is capable of charging the entire light-vehicle fleet off-peak. The question for the next decade is how to use them.

For businesses thinking about their fleet, this is a report worth reading. It covers EV adoption and market trends, charging infrastructure, fleet and freight electrification, fuel security and resilience, emerging technologies and smart energy systems, and the long-term policy consistency the sector needs.

We were proud to sponsor the Wellington Chamber of Commerce After 5 networking event last week at Prefab-ACME!

Vehicles are one of the most important business tools a company can have, yet how they’re funded and managed can have a significant impact on cash flow, efficiency, and long-term performance.

It was fantastic to have Jimmy Bell and Clayton Coe share practical insights into how vehicle leasing works and why more New Zealand businesses are outsourcing the management of their fleet.

It was great to see local small businesses and industry connecting — thanks to and everyone who joined us.

The FleetPartners team recently spent the day with Ford NZ at their Drive Day, putting the new model-year Ranger and Everest through their paces across four very different tracks.

The format gave us a proper look at each vehicle in the conditions our customers actually use them in.

1️⃣ Track one focused on the anti-lock braking system, with controlled scenarios that put the technology through its paces.
2️⃣ Track two demonstrated the Pro-Trailer Backup Assist with caravans and trailers, the kind of real-world reversing scenario that fleet drivers handle regularly.
3️⃣ Track three handed us the keys to the Ford Ranger Raptor for an off-road circuit, with the off-road technology managing terrain that few utes are built for.
4️⃣ Track four was a steering and handling loop across the wider range, with back-to-back drives that made it straightforward to compare ride quality and overall feel.

The Ranger 2026.50 has a refined 2.0L Powertrain - a step forward in driveability and acceleration. It is now paired with optimised 10-speed auto transmission, revised throttle and turbocharger calibration.

The Everest Active 2026.50 was a real highlight, with stylish dark finishes and a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity that opens the model up to a broader range of business use cases.

Thanks to the Ford NZ team for hosting, and for the time behind the wheel. Days like this give our team the firsthand experience that makes the conversation with customers more useful when they are weighing up the right vehicle for the job.

Last week, FleetPartners was proud to sponsor Drive Electric's State of the Nation event at Parliament, joining MPs, industry leaders and infrastructure partners for a frank conversation about the future of transport in Aotearoa.

The room was full of people working on the same challenge from different angles.

How does New Zealand make the most of the structural advantages it already holds, including 88 percent renewable electricity generation and a grid capable of charging the entire light-vehicle fleet off-peak, while addressing the gaps in charging infrastructure and policy stability that are slowing progress.

This is a commercial conversation as much as an environmental one. Our customers are running real fleets that need to operate reliably, with predictable payments and the right vehicles for the work ahead. Forums like this help us stay close to the data, the policy direction, and the operators driving change on the ground.

Thank you to Kirsten Corson and the Drive Electric team for bringing the sector together, and to every customer, partner and policymaker who joined the conversation in Wellington.

The Drive Electric State of the Nation 2026 report is now live, and is well worth a read for anyone making fleet or vehicle decisions over the next few years. Link in the comments.

FleetPartners makes it possible to include the full cost of a vehicle fitout within your lease, so your team arrives on day one with a vehicle that is ready to work, and no major upfront costs to absorb.

From shelving and drawer units for trades, to hydraulic hoists, fitout options may be tailored to suit how your vehicles are actually used.

BEV or PHEV? It is the question we get asked often, and the answer depends on the work the vehicle is actually doing.

Where each one tends to win:

A BEV could be the right call when the routes are predictable, daily kilometres sit comfortably inside the battery range, and there is reliable home or workplace charging. Lower running costs, fewer moving parts, no tailpipe emissions.

A PHEV could be the right call when the work is mixed. Long highway runs followed by short urban drops, regional sales loops, or rural use where charging infrastructure is patchy. Electric for the short trips, fuel for the long ones, with the range anxiety removed.

Most fleets we work with end up running a blend of BEVs, PHEVs and conventional hybrids, mapped to how each vehicle actually gets used.

Our latest blog breaks down the pros, cons and best-fit use cases for each.

For over 14 years, FleetPartners has been proud to support Duffy Books in Homes, helping bring the magic of reading to kids right across Aotearoa.

Last week, the Duffy Theatre team picked up their brand new Mazda CX-5, freshly signwritten and ready to hit the road. This is the vehicle that will carry the team into schools across the country, particularly in lower decile communities, where books and stories have a way of changing what a child believes is possible.

A huge thank you to the team at John Andrew Mazda for the seamless handover and the five-star service, and to David Rumney and Linda Vagana for the work they put in every single day to keep books in the hands of Kiwi kids.
