Donore Credit Union

Donore Credit Union Become part of Ireland’s first and most successful Credit Union located in the Liberties, Dublin 8

Welcome to Donore Credit Union , Ireland’s oldest credit union. The story of Donore Credit Union Limited (DCUL) can be traced back to April 1958 when a meeting of Cumann Muintir Dun Oir ( Donore Parishioner’s Union ) was held in St Joseph’s Hall on Cork Street with the inaugural meeting of the Credit Union taking place on April 26th 1958 at 35 Hamilton Street. The previous year, two sisters Eileen

and Angela Byrne had attended the National Co-operative Council meeting from where they brought the idea back to Donore Avenue. In the beginning the Credit Union operated from St Joseph’s Hall before it rented premises on Ebenezer Street in 1969. In 1991, the Credit Union moved into a purpose built premises on Rutledge Terrace from where it still operates. While the Credit Union had assets of £100 and a membership of 100 in its first year, it quickly grew to where it is today, having assets of €40 million and a membership of just over 5,300. DCUL continues to focus on the core business of loans and savings. The Board is mindful of the credit union’s iconic status as the oldest credit union in the country and wishes to leverage this position with all of its stake-holders including its members and the regulatory authorities. The Board of DCUL is committed to operating in accordance with the credit union principles and to dealing with members in a professional and respectful manner at all times.

On Friday we had the opportunity to visit Portobello Community Hall and see the incredible work that has gone into renovating and restoring this fantastic community asset.

It’s great to see a historic space being brought back to life and given a new purpose for the people of Dublin 8. We are proud to have played a small part in supporting the project and look forward to seeing the hall become a hub for the local community for years to come.

This is exactly what being a community credit union is all about - supporting local projects that make a real difference. 💙

We are happy to share that Donore Credit Union has won 1st Prize in the Business Competition – Business Environmental Initiative at the South Central Area City Neighbourhoods Competition 2026!

The awards took place in the Hyatt Centric The Liberties Dublin on Friday evening, with our award presented by Cllr. Daithí Doolan

And there’s more… we’ll now be heading to the National Final at the Mansion House!

The award recognises the work we’ve been doing to make the office more sustainable and to make the most of our limited urban outdoor space, including our vegetable garden, wildflower garden and flower boxes built by the D8 Men’s Shed to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals within our community. 🌻🥕🌼

We are incredibly proud to see these small local initiatives recognised. For us, sustainability is about showing that even in a busy urban area, small spaces can be transformed into something positive for people, nature and the community.

A huge thank you to our members for your continued support, it is because of you that we can continue to invest in projects like these and do more for our community.

Well done to Richie Power! We are excited to hear that the chats in the flats concept could potentially be making its way to television! 📺

Donore Credit Union was proud to support the launch of the Chats in the Flats video series back in January, helping to shine a light on the voices, stories and experiences of the working-class community in Dublin 8.

It’s fantastic to see the project getting the recognition it deserves. Well done Richie - we can’t wait to see what comes next! 👏

September is the right time to check your heating system before you actually need it.
The first cold snap has a way of revealing problems that were invisible all summer.

Three quick checks worth doing now:
- Bleed your radiators: cold at the top, warm at the bottom means trapped air.
- Check your boiler pressure
- Test your thermostat and timer and set them to your winter schedule for the colder weather

If your boiler is over 15 years old, the SEAI heat pump grant, now worth up to €12,500, is worth a look.

That's where Greenify comes in. A green home loan through your local credit union covers the gap between your grant and the full replacement cost.

To find out more about Greenify loans from your local credit union, call 1800 911 797 or visit www.greenify.ie.

Loans are subject to approval. Terms and conditions apply. If you do not meet the repayments on your loan, your account will go into arrears. This may affect your credit rating which may limit your ability to access credit in the future. Donore Credit Union Limited is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. Reg. No: 133CU

We are excited to share the news that Donore Credit Union has been shortlisted in three categories at the All Ireland Credit Union Awards! 🎉

One of our finalist nominations is for the Social Dividend – Sustainability Initiative, recognising our collaboration with Community Roots. Together, we have transformed an unused space outside the Credit Union into an urban vegetable garden and it’s already producing tomatoes, along with plenty of other vegetables! 🍅

This nomination is as much for Community Roots as it is for Donore. Without their expertise this project simply wouldn’t be possible. We are incredibly proud to be recognised for something that brings sustainability and the community together.

On Monday we had Lorraine and students from Scoil Treasa Naofa over to collect some of the old PCs from the office that have been swiped and ready to be used again.

We are delighted to see that the computers are not going to waste and instead being used by our local schools.
