GCSE Results Day 🎓

A bit of a personal one from me today.

I left school in 2001 without getting a single Grade C.

I didn’t have a big career plan mapped out and certainly didn’t know where I would end up.

I managed to get a job in an estate agents doing office admin. I started off typing up property brochures, helping around the office and doing whatever needed doing.

From there, I gradually moved on to matching potential buyers with properties, carrying out viewings and negotiating offers.

And that’s probably where I first realised how much I enjoyed the property world.

A few years later, I decided I wanted to move into financial services and become a mortgage broker.

But even that wasn’t straightforward.

I was initially knocked back from making the move within the firm I was working for at the time.

I knew it was the career path I wanted though, so I eventually had to make the decision to leave the company I was with and go somewhere else to give myself the opportunity.

At the time it felt like a big risk.

I was leaving somewhere I knew, because I wanted a career that I believed I could build a future in.

Looking back now, I’m very glad I backed myself.

I’m a big believer in education and I speak to my own children about working hard at school and getting the best results they possibly can.

Grades are important. They can open doors and make certain routes in life easier.

But I also know first-hand that the results you get at 16 don’t have to determine where you end up.

Sometimes things don’t go to plan.

Sometimes you get knocked back.

Sometimes the opportunity you want isn’t going to be handed to you and you have to go looking for it yourself.

For me, a good work ethic, being willing to learn, turning up every day, taking opportunities and not being afraid to start at the bottom have been far more important than the GCSE results I left school with.

Now, as a dad, of course I want my kids to do well at school.

But I also want them to understand that one set of results will never define what they’re capable of achieving.

So to everyone celebrating their GCSE results today, congratulations. 👏

And to anyone who hasn’t got the results they were hoping for, don’t think today decides your future.

There are plenty of different routes to where you want to be.

You might get knocked back along the way too. The important thing is not letting that knockback decide where you finish. ❤️

Saturday in the office and the team are still working away, helping clients get their plans over the line. 👏

August has started incredibly strongly for us, with a noticeable uplift in enquiries from home movers, remortgage clients and first-time buyers.

This week alone, we’ve already helped clients in some very different situations:

* 🏡 A first-time buyer who had lost hope after being ghosted by another broker. They contacted us, we got straight to work and their mortgage application was accepted within 24 hours of their initial enquiry.

* 🔨 A remortgage client looking to raise funds for a major home improvement project. We’ve helped put the finance in place to create an amazing new kitchen and living space extension.

* 🏚️ A client purchasing a property that isn’t currently mortgageable through traditional lending. Rather than simply saying it couldn’t be done, we looked at the bigger picture and recommended a bridging loan to enable the purchase, alongside a clear plan to refinance once the required works have been completed.

* ❤️ A new remortgage client who had no protection in place. As part of the conversation, we looked beyond simply getting them a new mortgage and discussed what their finances could look like if sickness or an accident meant they were unable to work once their employer benefits ended, and what could happen to the family home if one of them died.

After understanding those risks, they decided to follow our recommendation and put protection in place for both their income and their family home.

* 🚐 Frank has also been straight back into helping clients after getting home late Thursday evening from his holiday in Portugal. This week he helped a keen caravanning couple upgrade their older van to a newer one using a lifetime mortgage.

Their daughter simply wanted to see her parents enjoying more of the life they love, and this is a lovely example of how financial advice can sometimes be about much more than the money itself.

For them, it means more trips away, more freedom and more time enjoying something they genuinely love together.

That really sums up what good advice should be about.

It isn’t always just about finding a mortgage rate.

It’s about understanding the whole picture, identifying the risks, exploring the options and helping clients make informed decisions so they can achieve their goals and be better prepared for the unexpected.

And those are just a handful of the many clients we’ve helped this week.

A huge thank you to the team for continuing to put the hours in, even on a Saturday. 💪

Mortgages by McAteer — helping make the complicated feel simple.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Protection policies have exclusions and limitations and are subject to individual circumstances and underwriting.

A lifetime mortgage is not suitable for everyone, and it is important to seek financial advice before taking any action. All other options available should be explored before choosing equity release.

Interest is charged on both the original loan and the interest that has been added, the amount you owe will increase over time, reducing the equity left in your home potentially to nothing. Please discuss with your family and beneficiaries.
